Residents are being encouraged to visit a new exhibition at Warminster Library that explores how Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) was marked in the town.
VE Day – the formal acceptance by the Allies of Germany’s unconditional surrender at the end of World War II – led to nationwide festivities.
In Warminster, celebrations began on the eve of the declaration, with crowds filling the Market Place. On Tuesday 8th May 1945, almost every house in the town had managed to find a flag. Streets were decorated with bunting, and everyone – including pets – wore red, white and blue. The day ended with a huge bonfire on Cley Hill.
Warminster Library has created a display to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which will be on show until 31st May. Included are items such as a gas alert wooden ratchert rattle and Air Warden’s helmet.
The exhibit includes photographs from the Warminster Museum’s collection, including one of a tea party in Luxford Road. If you recognise anyone in the photo, museum volunteers would love to hear from you.
