PUPILS from a local primary school have been visiting a dementia day club in Warminster to spend time with members, forming bonds that span generations.
Children from Princecroft Primary School visit Old Silk Works club weekly to take part in activities such as playing games, doing puzzles and quizzes, or simply having a chat.
“This isn’t just about teaching our children empathy and patience,” said Alex Wood, a teacher at the school. “It’s about showing them the value of a close community, of slowing down to connect with someone’s story, and of recognising that there is lots to learn from being patient, kind and considerate, as well as from different generations in our community.”
Headteacher Gemma Pierson said, “Club members have also expressed their joy at seeing the children each week. For them, the visits bring energy, joy and a refreshing change to their routine.”
The project began last academic year with a group of Year 6 children attending the club. Following an overwhelmingly positive response from pupils, the initiative has now been integrated into the school’s wider curriculum. Pupils from Years 1 to 6 now take part in a term of visits.
“With a programme as enriching as it is joyful, this weekly meeting of young and old is here to stay – and the community is all the better for it,” said Gemma.
