Warminster and Flers celebrate 53rd year of twinning

A group from Flers in Normandy recently visited Warminster for a weekend to celebrate 53 years of twinning between the two towns.

Warminster has been twinned with Flers since 1973, with annual visits alternating between the two communities.

During the opening day of this year’s visit, guests enjoyed a demonstration of Morris dancing by White Horse Morris.

“It’s very nice, it’s the second time we have seen the dancers,” said Frederic, president of the French twinning committee, who first visited Warminster on a twinning trip in 2018. “It’s my third time here, it’s a lovely country.”

Estelle, a French twinning member, said: “It’s my first time here and I enjoyed joining in. I’m definitely enjoying this place, there are lovely people here and lovely weather.”

Activities during the visit also included a game of bowls, a gala dinner at Warminster School and a trip to Stourhead. Guests were also given tours of Warminster by their host families, and visited Avebury, Heaven’s Gate, Shearwater and Bath.

Warminster committee member Derek said, “Everybody has thoroughly enjoyed it and have all joined in.

“Next year we return to Flers to cement our friendship, but before then there will be social activities laid on to raise funds for the trip. New members to the association are always welcome.”
