A sinkhole has opened in a street in Warminster – and Wiltshire Council are looking into it.
Town councillor Mark Carter raised the alarm on Sunday 14th June after the sinkhole appeared at the junction of Pound Street and Pound Row.
Meanwhile, a helpful resident marked the hole with a flag to stop motorists from driving over it.
However, highways chiefs said there was no immediate danger to motorists and did not feel it necessary to close the road.
Cllr Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways, said, “We are aware of the issue reported at the junction of Pound Street and Pound Row in Warminster and have instructed our contractors to attend the site in order to investigate and carry out repairs.
“A repair team has been arranged to complete a permanent fix. If the defect proves more complex, a temporary repair will be made to ensure the area is safe, followed by a full repair as soon as possible.
“A road closure has not been required at this stage, but traffic management will be put in place if needed. The cause and size of the defect will be confirmed following a full site assessment.”
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and complete any necessary remedial work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.”
