Students at Kingdown School had the chance to question a member of the House of Lords during a virtual meeting aimed at broadening their understanding of politics.
Pupils from Years 11 to 13 who have an interest in history and politics took part in the government-led ‘Learn with the Lords’ scheme this month. History teacher Sim Player taught the group about the history, functions and processes of the House before the students planned questions to ask Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick, who joined them via a video call.
The session allowed students to speak on political issues they felt strongly about, as well as receive live updates on a contentious bill while it was being debated in Parliament.
The student group included future Oxbridge candidates and current Wiltshire Youth Council and National Youth Parliament members.
Following the session, the pupils were invited to visit the House of Lords and Parliament in person.
A spokesperson for the school said, “It was an inspiring afternoon and some students will be pursuing a career in politics.”
