Charity coffee morning for Dorothy House

A charity coffee morning to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care will take place this month.

The coffee morning will be hosted by Warminster United Church on Saturday 11th October, from 10.30am to 12pm.

“These monthly charity coffee mornings always have a welcoming, community feel about them, with many regulars coming along to chat, eat cake and enjoy coffee and tea,” said organisers.

Dorothy House provides free physical, emotional and spiritual support to adults in the area with an incurable, life-limiting illness or severe frailty, as well as to their families and carers.

The festival kicks off with the inaugural Youth Speaks competition, which focuses on giving confidence to young people of the area to learn vital public speaking skills. Beyond that, the weekend features an impressive lineup including world-renowned science writer Richard Dawkins and Booker Prize-winning novelist Samantha Harvey, plus fascinating talks on corruption, prisons, women in history, handwriting analysis, and medieval churches. “Offering intimate talks with some of the biggest names in literature, science, and journalism, the festival presents an impressive breadth of topics designed to stimulate and engage every attendee,” said organiser Ryan Child.   • Councillor leads calls for breast screening unit to be reinstated in Warminster A local councillor is campaigning for a breast screening service to be reinstated in Warminster. A mobile screening unit was previously based in Morrisons car park, but the service was recently withdrawn from the town. Residents now have to travel to nearby towns such as Westbury and Amesbury for their appointments, which are offered to women aged 50 to 70 for routine breast cancer screening. Cllr Liz Lee has raised concerns that limited access to services may cause women in Warminster to miss vital appointments and therefore diagnoses. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 women in the Warminster area qualify for the screening. The Wiltshire Breast Screening Service said the unit was removed due to antisocial behaviour, including people banging on the side of the van during treatment sessions. Cllr Lee said, “I am particularly concerned that the change will reduce screening uptake, especially among women with limited mobility or without easy transport. We know delays in diagnosis may lead to cancers being found at later stages, leading to increased costs for the NHS and worse outcomes for patients.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.

  • Carnival fundraising events throughout October Fundraising events in support of the upcoming Warminster Carnival will run throughout October, with profits donated to local charities. Curry night, Monday 13th October A raffle and curry night will take place at the Agra. Tickets cost £25 per head for a set menu, and people are invited to bring their own alcohol. Due to limited seating, organisers are asking people to book by contacting Felicity on 07870803466 or the Agra on 01985 212715. Skittles competition, Saturday 18th October A pairs skittles competition will take place at The Fox and Hounds, with doors opening at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Entry will cost £8 per pair, with the winners receiving a cash prize trophy. There will also be a raffle on the evening. To take part, contact Sandra on 07752 961660 Open night at the fire station, Monday 20th October Portway Fire Station will open for a free open night from 6.30pm.   • Warminster firefighters rescue pregnant horse from garden hole A pregnant horse was rescued by Warminster firefighters after becoming trapped in a large hole in a garden. Firefighters from Warminster’s Fire Station were called to a property in Dilton Marsh on the morning of Saturday 27th September, assisted by a specialist rescue team from Poole, following reports of a ‘large animal rescue.’ The horse had become stuck in a hole that had been dug in the garden as part of an ongoing home extension project. Four horses had entered the garden through a broken fence, but one pregnant horse became trapped in the deep soakaway hole. Firefighters worked carefully to free the animal, using an on-site mechanical digger to widen the area and allow the horse to be lifted to safety. Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.
  • Local veteran takes on Triple Challenge for mental health charity A local army veteran has successfully completed a gruelling ‘Triple Challenge’ on Snowdon raising more than £1,700 for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness. Capt. (Retd) Tom O’Brien, Chairman of the Warminster Branch of the Royal Irish Rangers, joined ten other participants from across the country for the challenge which saw them cycle 15 miles, hike up and down Snowdon, and then canoe the length of Lake Llyn Padarn. Tom raised a total of £1,703, which will go directly towards supporting those struggling with severe mental illness. “I wanted to raise the awareness of mental health issues, so by doing the challenge and all the build-up work, I had plenty of discussions with lots of different people,” said Tom.   • Bushcraft workshop for unpaid carers this Halloween A free bushcraft and campfire cooking workshop will be held this Halloween for unpaid carers in Wiltshire. The workshop will take place on 31st October, from 9.30am to 4pm, in a woodland near Warminster. The session will include opportunities to build wild shelters in the woodland, master fire lighting skills, make natural cordage and cook food underground over open flames. “Our new bushcraft workshop aims to give unpaid carers a unique chance to take time for themselves in the great outdoors,” said Martina Gibson, Head of Services and Volunteering at Carer Support Wiltshire, the charity organising the event. “With many carers seeking the benefits of nature for their wellbeing, the workshop offers a refreshing alternative that allows carers to relax, connect, and recharge while learning new skills together.” Read more on our website.   • Frome hosts South West’s largest camera and photographic fair Frome will once again play host to the South West’s largest celebration of all things photographic when the Frome Wessex Camera & Photographic Fair returns to the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 19th October. More than 30 specialist stalls will fill the venue, offering everything from modern digital gear to collectable vintage cameras, alongside lenses, filters, flashguns, film, books and old prints.   • Warminster School governor launches children’s adventure book to support local families The Chair of Warminster School governors and former pupil has published a children’s fantasy adventure book to support the school’s Bursary Fund and help local families. All profits from author Beverley Sunderland’s book, The History Gate Adventures: Giants and Dragons, will go towards Warminster School’s relaunch of its 1707 Bursary Fund, which provides a range of bursaries, including scholarships. Beverley describes the book as a fantasy adventure about a brother and sister, Jack and Rosie, who attend a school which only admits children who have a fundamental belief that everyone is good at something, and want to find what that is.
