In July the Warminster U3A arranged a trip consisting of a cruise from Poole along the Frome River to Wareham and back on a vintage motor yacht ‘The Dorset Queen.’
Once aboard we were soon under way, chugging westwards for an hour or more through Poole Harbour and into the Wareham Channel. The Wareham Channel narrowed as it meandered between extensive banks of eel-grass and eventually into the Frome River as Wareham drew closer.
All too soon we were arriving at Wareham quay and tying up. The timing of the tides meant that we had under an hour to find some refreshments and get back aboard.
Once we were all back on aboard the boat cast off and we turned around and were on our way. The morning’s grey clouds had begun to clear, and the sun shone for the cruise back. With current, tide and wind behind us the outskirts of Poole soon hove into view. A short detour along the length of the quay before returning to our mooring allowed us to admire the enormous ‘super-yachts’ being built in the quayside shipyard, destined for millionaires and oligarchs around the world.
After disembarking we had an hour or so to explore Poole, browse the quayside shops, enjoy an ice cream or seek refreshment or a late lunch in a quayside pub.
Due to how well received this trip was we are now seeking to build on that success with our next Warminster U3A social outing – to the Royal Mint in Llantrisant on 30th October.
