Rain affected final round of matches fails to dampen a highly successful season for Warminster Cricket Club

The weekend of the 30th August saw all three of the Warminster Cricket Club teams involved in rain affected matches, but what cricket was played still impacted final league standings.

The Warminster 1st XI fixture against Nationwide House was abandoned.  Nationwide House batted first and after 21 overs were 104 runs for the loss of four wickets, with Dylan Collier taking three wickets for 30 runs.  It was at this point that the arrival of the rain brought an end to the match.

This has been a highly successful season for the 1st XI, having already been crowned the winners of Division 1 early in August, after a dominating season and gaining promotion to the Wiltshire West of England Premier Cricket League for 2026.

The Warminster 3rd XI match against a Marshfield 3rd XI was abandoned after 28 overs of the Marshfield innings.  The opposition had reached 65 runs for the loss of five wickets when the rain arrived, with Alex MacDonald taking three wickets for 12 runs.

The league points awarded to the 3rd XI were enough to ensure that they finished second in Division 8 of the Wiltshire County Cricket League and hence secured a much-deserved promotion for next season.

The 2nd XI game against Coastal Cobras was reduced to a 20 over match due to the weather.  Batting first, Coastal Cobras struggled against some excellent bowling, scoring 104 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Best bowling figures came from Dan Smith with four wickets for 14 runs off his four overs and Elliot Woodhouse who took three wickets for 27 runs.  Unfortunately the weather intervened, with the game abandoned before the 2nd XI could begin their run chase.

Whilst over 50 players represented Warminster Cricket Club during the season; the top run scorers and wicket takers for the season were as follows: –

Warminster 1st XI leading run scorers: Anre Schutte – 859 runs at an average of 71.6 runs; Kevin Monaghan – 321 runs at an average of 26.8 runs.

Warminster 1st XI leading wicket takers: Bradley Small – 38 wickets at an average of 9.68 runs; Rory Cullinan – 29 wickets at an average of 14.1 runs.

Warminster 2nd XI leading run scorers: Evan Collier – 455 runs at an average of 32.5 runs; Cieran Woodhouse – 207 runs at an average of 13.8 runs.

Warminster 2nd XI leading wicket takers: Max Ellis – 23 wickets at an average of 21.74 runs; Cieran Woodhouse – 18 wickets at an average of 34.17 runs.

Warminster 3rd XI leading run scorers: Stuart Waterland – 481 runs at an average of 32.1 runs; Callum Widdows – 282 runs at an average of 47.0 runs.

Warminster 3rd XI leading wicket takers: Mark Evans – 33 wickets at an average of 14.79 runs; Alex Grace – 11 wickets at an average of 4.09 runs; Callum Widdows – 11 wickets at an average of 18.0 runs; Alex MacDonald – 11 wickets at an average of 27.45 runs.

  • Family host charity event in memory of father

The family of a local man who died in 2021 following a short illness with brain cancer have organised a charity coffee morning in his memory.

Nick McHale died in May 2021 just seven months after being diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. He is being remembered with a charity event on Saturday 18th October, from 10am to 12pm at the Lakeside Centre in the Lake Pleasure Grounds.

“Nick was an incredible husband and father, and to have him taken away so soon has been incredibly hard for us all,” said Rachel McHale, whose daughters were aged just 8 and 10 when Nick died. “I am, however, finding that helping to give back to those earlier in their bereavement journey helps incredibly.”

  • Community holds ‘duck walk’ in memory of local man

Warminster residents recently came together for a sponsored ‘duck walk’ in memory of a local man who took his own life earlier this year.

The event was organised in memory of Teilo How, a 22-year-old theatre technician at the Athenaeum who died in January, and has raised nearly £1,000.

Before his death, Teilo left farewell messages for friends on rubber ducks at the Athenaeum, asking that they be placed where they could watch the stage in his memory. This inspired the idea for the sponsored ‘duck walk’, raising awareness and funds for the men’s mental health charity Men’s Minds Matter.

“Although it was in memory of Teilo, it was a happy event. It was lovely,” said Penelope Christopher, who has known Teilo since he was 12 and organised the walk with his family.

“Offering intimate talks with some of the biggest names in literature, science, and journalism, the festival presents an impressive breadth of topics designed to stimulate and engage every attendee,” said organiser Ryan Child.

  • Councillor leads calls for breast screening unit to be reinstated in Warminster

A local councillor is campaigning for a breast screening service to be reinstated in Warminster.

A mobile screening unit was previously based in Morrisons car park, but the service was recently withdrawn from the town. Residents now have to travel to nearby towns such as Westbury and Amesbury for their appointments, which are offered to women aged 50 to 70 for routine breast cancer screening.

Cllr Liz Lee has raised concerns that limited access to services may cause women in Warminster to miss vital appointments and therefore diagnoses. An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 women in the Warminster area qualify for the screening.

The Wiltshire Breast Screening Service said the unit was removed due to antisocial behaviour, including people banging on the side of the van during treatment sessions.

Cllr Lee said, “I am particularly concerned that the change will reduce screening uptake, especially among women with limited mobility or without easy transport. We know delays in diagnosis may lead to cancers being found at later stages, leading to increased costs for the NHS and worse outcomes for patients.”

  • Warminster firefighters rescue pregnant horse from garden hole

A pregnant horse was rescued by Warminster firefighters after becoming trapped in a large hole in a garden.

Firefighters from Warminster’s Fire Station were called to a property in Dilton Marsh on the morning of Saturday 27th September, assisted by a specialist rescue team from Poole, following reports of a ‘large animal rescue.’ The horse had become stuck in a hole that had been dug in the garden as part of an ongoing home extension project.

Four horses had entered the garden through a broken fence, but one pregnant horse became trapped in the deep soakaway hole. Firefighters worked carefully to free the animal, using an on-site mechanical digger to widen the area and allow the horse to be lifted to safety.

  • Local veteran takes on Triple Challenge for mental health charity

A local army veteran has successfully completed a gruelling ‘Triple Challenge’ on Snowdon raising more than £1,700 for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness.

Capt. (Retd) Tom O’Brien, Chairman of the Warminster Branch of the Royal Irish Rangers, joined ten other participants from across the country for the challenge which saw them cycle 15 miles, hike up and down Snowdon, and then canoe the length of Lake Llyn Padarn.

Tom raised a total of £1,703, which will go directly towards supporting those struggling with severe mental illness.

“I wanted to raise the awareness of mental health issues, so by doing the challenge and all the build-up work, I had plenty of discussions with lots of different people,” said Tom.

  • Bushcraft workshop for unpaid carers this Halloween

A free bushcraft and campfire cooking workshop will be held this Halloween for unpaid carers in Wiltshire.

The workshop will take place on 31st October, from 9.30am to 4pm, in a woodland near Warminster. The session will include opportunities to build wild shelters in the woodland, master fire lighting skills, make natural cordage and cook food underground over open flames.

“Our new bushcraft workshop aims to give unpaid carers a unique chance to take time for themselves in the great outdoors,” said Martina Gibson, Head of Services and Volunteering at Carer Support Wiltshire, the charity organising the event.

“With many carers seeking the benefits of nature for their wellbeing, the workshop offers a refreshing alternative that allows carers to relax, connect, and recharge while learning new skills together.”
