Support future work of the Friends of Warminster Hospital

Residents are invited to find out more about the work of the Friends of Warminster Hospital (FOWH) at their annual general meeting (AGM) later this month.

The event will take place at the Warminster Civic Centre on Thursday 29th May, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

FOWH is a local charity founded in 1962 and run entirely by volunteers. The group supports Warminster Community Hospital, local surgeries and wider community healthcare initiatives.

The AGM will include a presentation on the future of healthcare in the Warminster area, offering a chance for residents to learn more and get involved.

Free tea and coffee will be available, and everyone is welcome to attend.

  • Community champions honoured in new town awards

Warminster’s community heroes have been recognised in the inaugural Warminster Journal’s Group and Person of the Year 2025 awards.

The awards were set up this year by the Warminster Journal to recognise contributions to the town over the past year with nominations from coming from readers, and winners being chosen by Warminster Mayor Andrew Cooper and Journal Editor Ian Drew.

  • Family campaign for bridge safety measures following son’s death

A Warminster family are campaigning for improved safety measures at Bristol Suspension Bridge after their son took his own life at the landmark last year.

Teilo How, a 22-year-old theatre technician at the Athenaeum, died in January last year. His father and stepmother, Marc Cox and Lindsay Lawyer, have launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a judicial review aimed at formally recognising the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust as a public body, which they hope will result in more steps being taken to prevent suicide at the location.

“When a site is known to be high-risk, those responsible should take meaningful steps to prevent avoidable deaths,” said Marc. “Without obligation or accountability, people in a vulnerable state remain unprotected and families continue to grieve in silence. Bringing the bridge up to standard will save lives, and it’s a legacy that my son, Teilo, would wish to see.

“We have started a public Facebook group called Justice for Teilo where we are posting regular updates regarding the campaign as well as any other related news.”

  • Swap Shop launches in Warminster

A new weekly Swap Shop is coming to Warminster, offering residents a chance to exchange items and connect with others.

The first Swap Shop will take place on Wednesday 7th January from 3pm to 5pm at The Wellbeing Hub. It will then run weekly every Wednesday at the same time throughout the year.

Residents are being encouraged to bring items in good condition including clothes, household items toys and books.

“If you’ve got something that’s in good condition but you no longer want, then bring it along to our new Swap Shop,” said Lydia, co-founder of The Wellbeing Hub.

“Pass on items you no longer need and pick up something useful in return, all in a relaxed and welcoming space.

“It’s a chance to swap useful items, enjoy a warm drink and a chat, meet new people and save money and reduce waste.

“Bring something good, take something good, and help keep our community moving forward."

Grace was born in 1925 in Broad Street. Life in Warminster Common could be hard at that time, and Grace said that “you had to fight to survive”.

At the age of ten, Grace’s family moved to a house in Bradley Road. She attended Newtown School in Chapel Street and later Sambourne School.

Grace left school to start work at the Silk Factory in West Parade on her fourteenth birthday.

  • Warminster Museum Column: George Street

There is interest in all of Warminster’s old streets and roads, but George Street must be a special case.

If your Lord of the Manor decides that he wishes to establish a market town, then it will be necessary to be able to get to this new town. Warminster was little more than Silver Street and Church Street in the 1200s and the new market was to be established in Market Place, so George Street became necessary.

Obviously, it wasn’t called George Street, it was simply the way to get from Silver Street to the new market. Then, as the market began to attract traders from nearby places, those coming from Corsley and those from the Deverills would also travel along this new way. People like to build houses beside roads so, as time progressed and the market developed, houses were built along both sides of this way.

The market was a successful venture, and more traffic used the road. This was an opportunity for anybody so minded to set up a small business in his house. Travellers can get thirsty, so why not brew ale? ‘George Street’ later had a modest pub and some shops.
