Warminster Rugby Club on the rise after season of rebuilding

Warminster Rugby Club have finished third in the league despite a season of change as they look to build for the future, reports club chairman Rob Rowbotham.

The club has been on a rebuilding phase throughout this season after the loss of over 25 players through injury or moving on at the end of the 23/24 season.

The start of this season saw the team drop a league as we start to rebuild with a single team. A lack of consistency amongst the squad during pre-season training was frustrating but to the credit of those that committed to us, we have managed to fulfil all of the fixtures with a strong third place finish in the league.

Last league game

The last league game of the season saw Warminster travel the short distance to Trowbridge to play Trowbridge 3rds.

Trowbridge won the toss and elected to receive from the kick off.

Winger Kieron Plumber was first to the ball making some good yardage before being brought down on the Trowbridge 22. Warminster infringements at the breakdown gave Trowbridge the ability to clear their lines and put the pressure back on to Warminster.

Warminster’s lack of discipline gave Trowbridge several penalties early on and it was from one of these penalties that Trowbridge managed to take the first points. A strong run from the Trowbridge number 8 saw him crash through the Warminster defence for the first try. Warminster continued to give silly penalties away which allowed Trowbridge to take further advantage scoring again shortly after leaving the score at 12-0 with five minutes to play in the half.

Warminster started to get a grip of their defence with front row prop Steve Rowbotham managing a good steel at the breakdown winning Warminster a well-deserved penalty on their own 22. Some quick thinking and well-placed passes through the hands saw debutant Petero Racumu break through the Trowbridge defence, running a full 70 metres to score under the posts. The score at half time was 12-7

The second-half started much like the first with Trowbridge punishing the Warminster mistakes and ill-discipline. Trowbridge scored again from another infringement by the visiting team.

Some sole searching and encouragement from the senior players, including the captain Gavin Kaminsky Pratt seemed to bring some life back into the team. Some much-needed ball in hand rugby was being played by Warminster with the forwards providing a great platform for the backs to work from. It wasn’t long before the forward dominance gave Warminster the opportunity to work from a solid scrum on the Trowbridge 22. Some quick ball through the hands from the fly half, Haydn Tryhorn saw the ball reach Racuma, some deft footwork and an offload to Toroco saw him break a couple of tackles before dotting down over the line. The conversion was scored giving Warminster some well-needed encouragement.

It was Trowbridge that scored next with some quick pick and goes from the relentless attack. To Warminster’s credit it took several phases of play before Trowbridge eventually broke the line. The Warminster pack were pushing Trowbrige hard with some great work from props Chris Lewis, Steve Rowbotham and back row Dan Bagshaw (man of the match). Some relentless attack on the Trowbridge try line eventually saw prop Steve Rowbotham hammer his way over the line for another Warminster score.

Unfortunately this was to prove a little late in the game with the final score being 26-21.

A valiant effort from a much-depleted Warminster team who will continue to rebuild as they enter upcoming cup games on the fixture list.

  • Visit Longleat House for ghostly goings-on this October

Longleat House is showcasing its spookier side this October half term, as Ghost Tours return during the estate’s Great British Autumn event.

The stately home was built between 1567 and 1580, and it is believed to still have people who featured in its history making their presence felt.

Visitors can discover the supernatural stories as expert guides reveal the tale of Lady Louisa Carteret, known as the Grey Lady, who is said to still walk the corridors searching for her lover.

“Visitors will find out more about those who have made themselves known from doors which slam when no-one is near, to the voice of a young girl heard as we close the house as well as random lavender aromas; it’s definitely a tour for all the senses,” said Longleat’s Emma Finlay.

The family activity day will be held on Thursday 30th October, from 9.45am to 1pm, at Warminster United Church.

There will be games, songs, stories and craft activities at the event, which will finish with a lunch.

Joan Jones, one of the organisers of the event, says the day will offer “an alternative to scary, spooky things that are around at Halloween!”

The day is free to attend, but the church will be accepting donations. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and spaces are limited to 25 children.

To book a space, call Joan on 0985 211861.

  • New entrance planned for Lake Pleasure Grounds

Plans are underway for a new entrance to make the Lake Pleasure Grounds more welcoming to visitors.

Warminster Town Council is planning to make the entrances to the Lake Pleasure Grounds, the town’s award-winning park, more visible and inviting. The council has recently agreed to seek tenders for designs to enhance the two main gateways on Weymouth Street.

Councillors said they would welcome ideas and comments from the public, and that it was likely that the final choice of design would be made by the public.

“We have a wonderful park that brings joy to thousands of people, but many people, particularly visitors to the town, can miss the entrance and not even realise we have a park at all,” said Councillor Stephen Kirkwood, Chairman of the Parks and Estate Committee.

  • Carnival royalty selected at fun day

Warminster’s carnival royalty, who will lead the town’s main carnival procession later this month, were chosen at the recent carnival fun day.

The fun day took place last month at the Lake Pleasure Grounds and also featured a dog show, a baby competition, as well as various stalls and children’s rides.

This year, the carnival prince will be 7-year-old Leo Boydell from Sambourne School. The princess will be 7-year-old Lorelei Harding from Princecroft School. She will be attended by 9-year-old Kimmie-Rose Ephgrave-Brown from The Minster School.

“After the official opening by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jack Jones, there were various competitions, including the popular fun dog show, which featured five categories,” said Sandra Major, Warminster Carnival chairperson.

Music for the afternoon was provided by Warminster Community Radio, while the Warminster Model Boat Club displayed their latest creations.

The carnival committee also recently received a cheque for £500 from Tracey Hyde of Redfish, representing the profit from this year’s Carnival Chase, to go towards this year’s carnival.

The royalty will head the main procession at Warminster Carnival on Saturday 25th October.

  • Cheers! Old Bell Hotel earns first ever listing in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide

The Old Bell Hotel in Warminster has been included for the first time in the 2026 edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide.

Landlord James Sullivan-Tailyour said being included in the Guide was “a huge honour” for the team and recognition of the effort put into keeping beer to a high standard.

The 14th century coaching inn offers a range of Wadworths beers alongside craft and real ales.

“The Good Beer Guide is the standard for quality pubs, so to be included for the first time is fantastic,” said James. “We take real care to make sure our ales are in the best possible condition, and this entry is recognition of the effort the whole team puts in.

“Real ale is something we feel is important to promote, and we’re proud to be part of keeping that tradition going locally.”

  • Wiltshire Lib Dems push for return of free Blue Badge parking

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Parking for Blue Badge holders in council-run car parks in Wiltshire will be free – if the Liberal Democrat administration can get the idea past its political rivals.

In 2022 the Conservative administration ended free parking for Blue Badge holders in its car parks.

As a concession, they offered people with disabilities, or those who have a health condition that makes it difficult to walk, an extra hour to get back to their cars after the period for which they had paid expired.

In their pre-election manifesto, the Lib Dems promised a return of free parking for Blue Badge holders.

But with numbers tight they will need to rely on the backing of independents, Conservative or Reform UK councillors, or the sole Labour councillor to push the motion through.

It is anticipated that the move will cost around £40,000 a year in lost parking revenue.

There are several Wiltshire Council-run car parks in Warminster including Station Road and Weymouth Street.

  • Warminster Business Network Breakfast brings local businesses together

Business owners and professionals from across Warminster and the surrounding villages gathered at The Old Bell Hotel on Wednesday, 24th September, for the first Warminster Business Network Breakfast.

The event provided a relaxed setting for local business people to share ideas, make new connections and learn more about the network’s initiatives.

Amongst the topics discussed were several initiatives the group has been involved in, including the success of the Warminster Independent Markets and plans to launch the first-ever Warminster Business Awards, set to feature a gala dinner celebrating local talent and enterprise. Attendees also shared ideas on how to further improve the town, as well as raising concerns around business rates which are to be raised with local MP Andrew Murrison at a meeting planned for later this month.

  • Local branch of Your Party launches

The local branch of a new left-wing political party launched on Saturday 27th September, with more than 50 people attending its first meeting in Frome.

Your Party, co-led by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, was launched in July. It aims to provide an alternative to the ‘status quo’ and to ‘ensure a fair society for all.’

Organisers say they were very pleased with the turnout for the first meeting of the Frome and West Wiltshire branch. Spokesperson Pete Mellen said, “It was truly heartwarming to see so many people come forward to volunteer to help with pushing the movement forward,” despite the recent spat between Jeremy and Zarah.

“Attendees, who spanned all backgrounds and ages, addressed their local and national concerns, with many highlighting the need for electoral reform and the lack of social housing and services for young people. Other issues were responses to climate change, the NHS, regulation of big tech social media, and local river pollution.”
