A new piece of public art inspired by the Warminster Thing could soon be created in the town, following potential plans to demolish the current mural.
The mural, inspired by the ‘Warminster Thing’, a series of mysterious sky sightings reported in the 1960s and 70s, is located by the Central Car Park on a wall backing onto the town’s former police station.
But under plans to redevelop the site and turn it into new homes, the artwork could be demolished.
Stuart Dike, organiser of the upcoming Warminster Thing conference which will mark 60 years since the first sighting, described the news as “disappointing for the town” but has vowed to find a solution.
He said, “We are working closely with the artist who created the previous mural. We need to find a new location where the Warminster Thing can be celebrated and enjoyed by people in town.
“We’re hoping to add some new bits and pieces to the design which can help tie it in with the upcoming conference.”
Stuart’s proposed new replacement mural, seen by the Warminster Journal, reimagines the wider Warminster Thing mystery in a modern and colourful piece of art.
However, help is needed to source a suitable wall space for the mural to be housed. Stuart is working with the Heart of Warminster community Facebook page to find a location, and people can email Lesley on heartofwarminster@aol.co.uk with ideas.
Stuart hopes the artwork can be in place ahead of the Warminster Thing conference on Sunday 24th August. Held at the Athenaeum, the event will include presentations from local expert Steve Wills, UFO investigator John Hanson and master dowser Maria Wheatley.
Stuart said, “Warminster is gearing up for the 60th anniversary of the Thing, we’re really excited to bring the conference to town. It will be great for ufologists but also for local people who are inquisitive about what happened.”
