A Warminster man aged 101 is continuing his mission to support local children with life-limiting conditions through a community discount scheme which has raised thousands of pounds for charity.
John Wheeler runs the District Community Membership Scheme (DISCOM), which allows residents to access discounts at local businesses while their subscriptions are used to support good causes.
The scheme is currently supporting Warminster-based charity Wonder Wards, which raises funds to improve the quality of life for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.
DISCOM recently donated £1,200 to the charity, with funds helping support its appeal for four-year-old Isak Palmer from Trowbridge.
Isak lives with multiple conditions, including a serious heart defect and cerebral palsy. Wonder Wards is raising money for a specialised wheelchair which it says would improve his life “immeasurably”.
“Members subscribe £1 weekly and recoup this easily by using local takeaways, restaurants, garages and businesses who are also members and give them discount,” said John.
“DISCOM regularly gives funds to Wonder Wards and has just transferred funds for June totalling £1,200.”
Wonder Wards founder Leigh Gilles said, “I think this is a great scheme. It brings the community together in a group effort to help local charities, specifically Wonder Wards, whilst also helping small local businesses gain more customers by offering the DISCOM members/donors a small discount.
“Since focussing on Wonder Wards, the DISCOM have donated a total of £2,350, with the latest donation of £1,250 going towards our Isak appeal. We look forward to the continued support of the DISCOM and all of its wonderful Warminster members.”
DISCOM does not keep any money from subscriptions, with the full amount donated to the charities it supports.
