Enjoy Thai food at carnival fundraising evening

A Thai cuisine fundraising evening will help raise money for the Warminster Carnival.

On Wednesday 13th August, guests can enjoy a two-course sit-down meal at the Old Bell Hotel, starting at 7pm for a 7.30pm sit-down.

The event costs £28 to book and has been organised by the Old Bell and the Warminster Carnival Committee.

  • Simon and Garfunkel tribute returns to Warminster An acclaimed Simon and Garfunkel tribute act will be bringing the duo’s harmonies to the Athenaeum next month. The two-hour show from The Sounds of Simon will cover the songs that made Simon and Garfunkel famous as a duo, as well as exploring the songs that launched their respective solo careers. Their new show, Old Friends Together and Apart, will include all the classics, from The Sound of Silence to Bridge over Troubled Water, You Can Call Me Al and Art Garfunkel’s smash hit Bright Eyes. Ben Bowden and Adam Ellis, who play the duo on stage, have been described by music writers as ‘the world’s best Simon and Garfunkel tribute.’ Their show will be accompanied by archive footage of Simon and Garfunkel, allowing the stars to tell their own story.   • Warminster Community Radio to expand coverage Warminster Community Radio (WCR) has recently received a £9,000 grant from the town council so that the station can expand its coverage and improve its signal. They have been awarded a Digital Audio Broadcast Licence (DAB) to serve Warminster and the surrounding area. The better signal will be available to the 18,000+ residents in Warminster, and potentially up to 200,000 people in West Wiltshire and East Somerset.   • Town to unite for Remembrance Day Warminster’s annual Remembrance Day Parade and Service will take place on Sunday 9th November. The parade will assemble in East Street at 2.30pm and the main parade will march off at 2.40pm. The Royal British Legion (RBL) bikers’ contingent will drive the same route in advance of the march. Members of the public are invited to line the route, which is through Market Place, High Street and The Close, down to Portway. The service will then take place at the War Memorial in Portway, starting at 3pm and lasting around 40 minutes.   • Over 300 men tested at Warminster prostate screening event An event offering free prostate cancer screening to local men saw over 300 men tested to help identify early signs of the disease. Organised by Warminster Lions Club in conjunction with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, the event saw 324 men aged between 40 and 80 receive a free blood test. The screening day took place on Saturday 18th October at the Thomas Arnold Hall in Warminster School. “What a huge success Saturday’s prostate cancer screening has been,” said Warminster Lions Club President Ros Harrison. “We have served our community exceptionally well by providing a lovely setting, thanks to the generosity of Warminster School, and a well-organised process and friendly atmosphere for all those who visited. “Thank you to the eight local companies who sponsored this testing. There were many positive comments and compliments from everyone I spoke to, and it was a day that reminds us what it is to be a Lion and to be part of such a terrific team serving our local community.” Read more on our website.   • Warminster history captured in student’s artwork Artwork created by a Warminster student celebrating the town’s history is now on display at Warminster Museum. Titled ‘Where I Grew Up’, the textile piece was created by Warminster resident Madison Chappell while studying on an A-Level Creative Arts course at Trowbridge College. It explores the town’s heritage and reflects the lives and memories of its residents. “This piece is made from my Grandad’s old tablecloth; this both links my work to my family and Warminster’s cloth industry,” said Madison. “To provoke reflection, I have used faint prints of photographs, leaflets and documents related to the town’s history and my ancestors."   • England rugby legend inspires local schoolchildren England rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi inspired pupils during a visit to a local primary school this month. The former England player visited Crockerton Primary School to share her story with the pupils. Guests from three other local schools, Wylye Valley Primary School, Horningsham Primary School and Sambourne Primary School, were also in attendance. She shared her personal journey to becoming a World Cup winner. Following the heartbreak of losing out to New Zealand in both 2006 and 2010, the Red Roses beat Canada in 2014 to become world champions. Maggie retired shortly after but remained involved in the sport, working as a BBC broadcaster for this year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup. She was awarded an MBE in 2012 for services to rugby. “This was truly inspiring,” said Miss Sides from Crockerton Primary. “What an incredible person Maggie is – we feel that passions and minds have grown as a result of this visit.” Read more on our website.   • Halloween colouring competition for children and teens Children and teenagers in Warminster are invited to take part in a Halloween colouring competition. Participants can visit Boots Opticians, who are running the competition, to collect colouring sheets, complete their designs and return them for a chance to win. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories: under 6, 6 to 11, and 12 and over. The competition will close on 3rd November. The branch is open from 9am to 5.30pm on weekdays and Saturdays.   • Warminster school uniform shop to close after 20 years A school uniform shop in Warminster is set to close after nearly 20 years of serving local families. Scholars, which provides uniforms for primary schools in the town and Kingdown School, will close its Warminster branch on Thursday 31st October due to declining sales. The shop, originally based in the High Street before moving to George Street, has supplied schoolwear to local pupils for two decades. All remaining stock will now be transferred to Scholars’ Trowbridge branch in Fore Street, with online uniform availability remaining unchanged. Owner Edward Kirk said, “I have enjoyed being in Warminster and have tried everything to keep the shop open for our schools and loyal customers, but at the moment the shop is simply not viable. I am very grateful for the understanding and support shown to me by the schools and customers. I haven’t given up completely and will be back on the high street if I can find a way to make it work. My family business has been operating in some of our existing premises for over 70 years and we remain committed to retail wherever possible.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio.
  • Sustainable Warminster: The scary truth about Halloween A recent study by environmental charity Hubbub (2019) revealed some chilling statistics: In the UK alone, over 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste come from costumes, 83% of which are made from non-recyclable, oil-based plastics and typically binned after one use. Plastic decorations add to the problem, often ending up in landfills or waterways, where they take decades to break down and leak harmful chemicals and plastics into the environment. Recycling Halloween costumes and decorations can make a huge difference in reducing waste and pollution. It’s a fun way to refresh your look without buying new. -Breathe new life into old Halloween costumes by mixing and matching pieces from different outfits to create something unique, or pair costume pieces with your everyday wardrobe.
