Minster School pupils ‘share the miracle’ with Easter egg deliveries

Sarah from the MS Centre and Mr Hobbs with pupils from Minster Primary School at the charity’s therapy garden

Children at Minster CofE Primary School in Warminster made a special visit to the MS Centre.

The charity, located on the Avenue, supports individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions.

Minster School pupils recently visited the MS Centre as part of Compass Collaboration’s annual Share the Miracle initiative. The project brings together children and families to spread joy and kindness. As part of the initiative, the school collected Easter eggs to gift to members of their local community.

Pupils visited the centre to make the delivery, accompanied by headteacher Mr James Hobbs. There, they met with Sarah and Amanda from the charity, who gave the group an insightful tour of the facilities. Highlights included visits to the physiotherapy room, the therapy garden, and even the oxygen chamber, where the children learned how the equipment works and how it helps people manage their conditions.

The visit ended on a sweet note as the children handed out Easter eggs to members, volunteers, and staff.

Amanda, from the MS Centre, said, “It was such a pleasure to welcome the children and staff from Minster School.

“Their visit brought a real sense of joy and excitement to our centre. The members, volunteers, and staff were all so touched by the Easter eggs and the kindness shown – it really did brighten everyone’s day.”

Schools that took part in the Share the Miracle initiative also included Crockerton, Horningsham, Wylye Valley, Sutton Veny, and Sambourne.

  • Warminster visits Flers for 52nd twinning celebration

A delegation from Warminster has crossed the Channel to visit its twin town of Flers in Normandy, celebrating more than five decades of friendship between the two communities.

Warminster has been twinned with Flers since 1973, with annual visits alternating between the two towns. Over the past 52 years, strong bonds have been formed between host families and communities.

Last month, 26 residents, including former mayor Cllr Stacie Allensby and her family, made the journey to Normandy for the 52nd official twinning meeting. It was an early 4am start for the group as they raced to catch the 8.30am ferry to Ouistreham.

Derek Severn, who was on the trip with his wife Maxine, said, “Before meeting up with our hosts, we took an excursion to Bénouville to visit Pegasus Bridge, the site of one of the major actions of the Second World War. We reflected on the life-changing events of 1944, before peace was eventually secured the following year.

  • Warminster welcomes new mayoral team

Warminster has a new mayoral team for the year ahead, with Cllr Andrew Cooper appointed as town mayor and Cllr Jack Jones named as his deputy.

Speaking at the annual town council meeting on Monday 12th May, both councillors said it was an “honour” to take on the roles and pledged to serve the Warminster community with pride and commitment.

The pair will chair town council meetings, attend civic events, and support local charities throughout their term.

Cllr Cooper said, “I thank my fellow councillors for their nomination and support. I wish to thank the former Mayor, Cllr Stacie Allensby, for her support and guidance whilst I was deputy town mayor.

“I will do my best for and by the people of Warminster. I want to put even more back into the fantastic Warminster community.

“I’m very happy to continue to contribute to all the good Warminster Town Council is doing.”

  • History of the Athenaeum’s grand piano uncovered

A Warminster woman has uncovered the fascinating link between her family and the Athenaeum’s grand piano.

Clare Hancock was inspired to delve into the instrument’s history after recognising the piano during a performance by Trio Paradis – a music group made up of Jacquelyn Bevan on piano, Ruth O’Shea on violin, and Linda Stocks on cello.

Clare said, “I was absolutely delighted to see Jacquelyn beautifully playing the wonderful Yamaha grand piano, which my late, very musical father, Alan Shephard, sourced for the theatre 53 years ago in 1972.

“The piano had been stored for a long time under covers, so it is great that it is being used again, having been tuned by Barry Mole, who helped Alan install the piano and has tuned it ever since.”

  • Major conference to explore mystery of the Warminster Thing this summer

Warminster is to host a major conference this summer to mark 60 years since a series of mysterious sightings in the sky.

The Warminster Thing was first reported by Arthur Shuttlewood, former features writer at the Warminster Journal. He detailed a woman’s shock after she experienced ‘sudden vibrations’ and a ‘menacing sound’ in the sky above Cradle Hill in 1965. By June of that year, similar reports were coming in from across the town, and the ‘Warminster Thing’ became known nationwide.

Now, a major conference will mark the 60th anniversary of the sightings. Held at the Athenaeum, the event is expected to draw a large number of UFO enthusiasts to the town.

Organiser Stuart Dike is also keen for local residents to get involved.

  • Warminster Town FC introduces reusable cups for greener matchdays

Warminster Town Football Club is taking steps to create a more environmentally friendly matchday experience.

The club has received a welcome boost from local business Prestbury Sports Bar, which has sponsored a new set of reusable plastic pint cups.

The cups – which feature both the Warminster Town FC and Prestbury Sports Bar logos – will be used at the club’s home matches as part of a new initiative to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Supporters can use the cups by paying a £2 cash deposit, refunded in full when the cup is returned.

A spokesperson for the club said, “We’re extremely grateful to Prestbury Sports Bar for their support. It’s great to see a local business getting involved in the community and helping us take steps towards a more environmentally friendly matchday experience.”

  • Sustainable Warminster: In praise of wildflowers

A few weeks ago, Paul Jupp of Meadow in my Garden gave a talk at the Civic Centre about the importance of having any green civic space, plus areas in our gardens, given over to growing wild flowers.

As well as being colourful, these areas are vital for encouraging insects and pollinators and contribute more than we realise to our future.

Considering the bigger picture, in the UK there are some 24 million acres of grassland which receive 40 kilos of weed killer per acre! This will remove any chance of a buoyant insectivorous environment but more importantly, flora-rich meadows are proven to provide greater carbon storage than woodland.

Warminster Youth FC’s under-9s team has been bolstered by a new kit sponsorship.

  • Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team: An introduction

My name is Lou Oakley and I am the current inspector for the Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team covering Warminster, Westbury, Mere and Tisbury. I have been in this post for 15 months but have 19 years’ experience with Wiltshire Police.

I first joined in 2006 as a PCSO and have worked across many departments, including response, neighbourhoods, and PSU – a specialised unit trained to an advanced tactical level in public order and riot control.

My passion is frontline policing, and I believe that targeting the root cause of criminality can make a real difference in the community and help build trust and confidence in policing.

I recognise that the police are not able to solve criminality by themselves, and I enjoy working closely with partner agencies, looking at the long-term problem-solving approach.
