Warminster Town have lifted the Wiltshire FA Senior Cup in a historic 2-1 win over Devizes Town in the final last week.
It is a long-awaited win for the club who last lifted the trophy more than 100 years ago. A header from Braden Humphreys put Warminster ahead just before half-time and he added a second after the break.
Devizes Town pulled a goal back on 63 minutes to set up a tense finish, but Town held on to record their first win in the tournament since the 1910-11 season.
Speaking to Warminster Journal after the match, manager Rob Nash said, “I can’t believe it to be honest! It’s a great feeling, long overdue at this club, a great send-off, I’m just delighted.
“The lads were amazing tonight. 100% they all put in. Like we said to them before the game, ‘don’t have any regrets tonight’ and they haven’t. Delighted! It’s been a long road to get here, but so pleased, really proud!”
Club chairman James Stone added, “It was a fantastic occasion for the football club and a proud moment to see Warminster Town lift the cup after such a long time.
“The players and management team gave everything on the night, and they fully deserved the result.
“For the club, the supporters and the town, it means a great deal. Success like this brings people together and is a reflection of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes week in, week out; from the players and staff to the volunteers who keep the club running.
“We had a tremendous following at the final, and the support the team received was outstanding. Those are the moments that make grassroots football so special and underline what the club means to the local community.”
The final was on Tuesday 14th April at the home of Chippenham Town. Warminster went into the game as underdogs but overturned the form book to beat Devizes who had clinched the Western League Division One title the previous week, were the reigning Wiltshire Cup holders and the most successful side in the tournament’s history.
The win for Warminster is the fourth in their history but you have to go back to before the First World War and the 1910-11 season, for their last win.
