Primary school celebrates tag rugby success

A team of Year 5 and 6 pupils from Sambourne CE Primary School has been crowned champions at the West Wilts Tag Rugby Tournament.

Teams from 16 primary schools took part in the event at Trowbridge Rugby Club, with Sambourne competing in the Small Schools category against seven other local schools.

“It was an incredible day of unbeaten rugby throughout the group stages that saw them through to the final and overall victory,” said teacher Steven Morgan.

“The children showed a great understanding of the game and incredible sportsmanship throughout.”

  • Open day offers chance to join Athenaeum volunteer team

The Warminster Athenaeum is holding a special volunteer open day later this month.

The event on Sunday 28th June will coincide with the town’s Summer Street Market and offers an opportunity for visitors to explore the historic venue, meet current volunteers and learn more about the roles available.

Run entirely by volunteers, the Athenaeum has seen a growing programme of shows and events organised for this year and this means that additional help is now needed to keep the venue running smoothly.

  • Schoolchildren wear green to support community campaign

Pupils at St John’s CofE Primary School wore green clothes for a day to raise funds for a local campaign group hoping to create an open space in the town centre.

The day raised funds for the Warminster Community Green Association and was one of many events the association is planning throughout the summer to raise money towards the potential purchase of the site next to St Lawrence Chapel, with the aim of turning it into a green space.

“We wore green today to support our local community,” said a Year 5 pupil. “It’s important to have green spaces. If they continually build more houses there will barely be any open spaces left.”

  • Comedy musical heads to Warminster after successful debut

A comedy musical inspired by the court of Henry VIII is set to be staged at Warminster’s Athenaeum Theatre later this month as part of a summer tour across the South West.

Kairos Theatre Company will bring its production of King of Fools to the Athenaeum Theatre on Friday 26th June following a successful run at the Merlin Theatre in Frome last year.

The company, which draws performers from across the region, said it had not expected to revive the production after its original staging, but audience reaction prompted a return. The Warminster performance forms part of a short tour that also includes dates in Bath, Cornwall and a gala performance in Frome on Thursday 2nd July as part of the 25th anniversary of the Frome Festival.

  • Show to celebrate Longleat’s motoring history

Over 100 cars and motorbikes will be on show at Longleat this month to honour the estate’s motoring history.

The Motor Show Weekender will take place on Saturday 27th June and Sunday 28th June, with entry included as part of the Longleat day ticket.

This year marks 50 years since the first Bath-based Lombard Rally, which has previously included stages that raced directly through Longleat Estate and Safari Park. There will be two demonstration runs: a spectator stage set against the backdrop of Longleat House and a tarmac run inspired by the Lombard Rally. Cars on display will include the Jaguar XJ220, Ford GT40, DeLorean DMC-12 and the Jaguar E-Type Series 3.

  • Longleat hosts final of Interior Design Masters

Longleat provided the backdrop for the final of the latest series of BBC One’s Interior Design Masters presented by Alan Carr.

The final episode of the seventh series saw contestants Lia Gold and Sophie Newlands tasked with transforming two of the estate’s holiday cottages.

Drawing inspiration from either the surrounding countryside or Longleat’s safari park, the designers were challenged to create standout interiors while showcasing how their skills had developed throughout the competition.

The winner would secure a partnership with retailer Next to launch their own homewares range.

  • Local pupils help improve town park

Pupils from Kingdown School have been helping to improve the environment at the Lake Pleasure Grounds through a partnership with the town council.

A group of Year 7 and 8 students worked with the council’s Parks and Estates team to build bug hotels, help prepare boats for the Spring in the Park event and support general park maintenance.

“I felt that there was a need for our young people to connect with the natural environment, make positive links with the local community and show just how fantastic our young people in Warminster are,” said Sarah Miller, head of house for Lord’s House at the school. “I contacted the town council just over a year ago to suggest that we develop links and they have been amazingly supportive in suggesting all kinds of projects.”

  • Warminster family back proof-of-life campaign for detained Myanmar leader

The Warminster relatives of detained Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi are supporting a campaign calling on the country’s military rulers to prove she is still alive.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the former leader of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been detained since the military coup in 2021 and has not been heard from by her family for three years. Supporters are now demanding ‘proof of life’ after claims she was moved from prison to house arrest earlier this year.

The politician, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, will celebrate her 81st birthday on 19th June, her fifth birthday in detention.

Warminster resident Lucinda Phillips’ brother, Michael Aris, was married to the politician until his death in 1999.

  • From ‘Washout’ to ‘Green Sweep’

The last two rounds of fixtures have highlighted the maddening extremes of a cricket season in England.

The three fixtures on the weekend of 6th June were all abandoned without a ball being bowled, whilst Saturday 13th June saw the first Warminster Cricket Club ‘Green Sweep’ of the season, where all three teams won.

The Warminster 1st XI travelled to Avebury for their fixture in the Wiltshire West of England Premier League. Warminster won the toss and elected to field, but the Avebury 1st XI started brightly and had scored 80 runs for the loss of only one wicket in their first 14 overs.
