Warminster Museum: Empire Day

At the end of the South African wars in 1902 (always known by the people at the time as the Boer War) it was felt that a day should be set aside to celebrate the glorious empire.

The government was not agreeable to making it a public holiday, so it would be a day to raise the flag and hang up other patriotic bunting throughout the land. The first official, nationally observed Empire Day, was 24th May 1904. 24th May was the birthday of the late Queen Victoria.

It was decided that the main observation of the day should be aimed at school children. The afternoon was devoted to parades and speeches, telling the children of our great empire. The aims were quite specifically laid out:

“To remind children that they form part of the British Empire, and what it means to be sons and daughters of such a glorious empire. The strength of the empire will depend upon them, and they must never forget it.”

In the afternoon celebrations, the children would watch the raising of the flag and would give it three cheers. They would then listen to speeches given by the local ‘great and good’. They would sing the national anthem, cheer for the King, cheer for the Queen and then they could go home.

It is open to question how much the children enjoyed this afternoon. School leaving age before the First World War was 12, and large numbers of children did not stay in school as long as that. But perhaps it was better than lessons.

The museum has copied out the report that was in the Warminster Journal, 30th May 1913, of the school celebrations of Empire Day 1913. If you are in the area of the library and you have a few minutes to sit and read, you will enter a time, only just over 100 years ago, that is so utterly different from today. These good people could not know that their world would never again be like 1913.

Ask at the Library reception desk for a copy to read.

Warminster Town have got their pre-season underway.

New manager Aaron Seviour, who took over from Rob Nash at the end of last season, took his side to face Melksham Town Reserves on Tuesday 7th July and came away with a convincing 4-2 win.

Behind at the break, Town fought back in the second-half with a brace from Harry Guy and goals from Seb Hounsell and Martin Johnson to clinch the win.

Warminster then hosted Trowbridge Town on Friday 10th July, drawing 1-1 after leading at the break.

Next up is another local derby on Friday 17th July, as Westbury United are the visitors to Weymouth Street, with a 7.30pm start.

  • Roarminster launches summer programme of events

A summer of dinosaur-themed activities has officially begun in Warminster with the launch of Roarminster, a town-wide trail and events programme for families.

The initiative was launched during the town’s first YouthFest at the Lake Pleasure Grounds on Saturday 11th July, where families enjoyed a range of free activities while finding out about what is on offer for young people in the town.

Throughout the school holidays, residents can explore Warminster to discover different dinosaurs, learn about them, enter a prize draw and take part in a programme of themed events and activities.

A Roarminster shopping loyalty card has also been launched, with a top prize of £500.

  • Parking charges introduced at popular walking spots

Residents visiting Heaven’s Gate and Shearwater at the Longleat Estate will now have to pay a fee to park following the introduction of car park charges.

Drivers will now be charged £1.50 per hour to park at the popular beauty spots.

This follows a decision made by Longleat earlier this year as part of wider investment plans for the areas.

Development Director at Longleat, David Leverett, said, “We ensured plenty of advance notice that charging was being introduced by highlighting the initiative five months ago as part of wider work taking place.”

Blue badge holders using designated disabled bays will not be charged.

  • Inspire Festival – Annual music festival brings crowds to town park

Over 1,000 people turned out to the Lake Pleasure Grounds for a free afternoon of live music and entertainment as Inspire festival returned.

The festival, which has been running since 2013, returned on Sunday 5th July, featuring acts including AmJam, Dusk Drums, Incolour and Sad Dad Club. Local band Primate State also made its debut at the festival after being inspired to form the band following a visit to Inspire in 2023.

“We’ve been absolutely blown away by the amount of positive feedback both on the day and in the days since,” said creative director Thomas Hiscocks. “Many have praised the variety in the line-up and the sheer quality of the music on show, with suggestions that it may have been the best yet!

  • Quiz night supports men’s support group

Attedees at a recent pub quiz night helped raise £177 for a Warminster-based men’s support group.

The event at Prestbury Sports Bar raised money for We Are Men (WAM), a group which provides support, companionship and opportunities for men to connect with others, helping to tackle issues such as loneliness and social isolation.

“It was a great evening,” said WAM organiser Zanne Marchmont. “The support from everyone who attended was fantastic, and we are grateful to Prestbury Sports Bar for hosting the fundraiser.”

Funds raised during the quiz night will help the group continue its activities and support services within the community.
