The final round of league fixtures was scheduled to take place on Saturday 29th August; however, a weather reality check led to all three fixtures being abandoned without a single ball being bowled.
Whilst this marked a disappointing final day of the season, it also triggered celebrations as the Warminster 2nd XI were confirmed as the winners of Division 5 of the Wiltshire County Cricket League.
The Warminster 1st XI also had, what turned out to be, a highly positive season. Having been promoted to the West of England Premier League (Wiltshire) for this season, the first half of the summer produced only one league victory, and the signs were that a challenging season lay ahead. However, a remarkable turnaround in team performances and the injection of examples of individual brilliance saw the team win six and only lose two of their final nine matches. The team ended the season in the top half of the league, with much to be proud of and plenty to build upon.
The 2nd XI enjoyed a highly successful season, one which will see them return to Division 4 next year. Fielding the youngest team in the league, they won 11 of their 18 matches and only lost three, maintaining their position at the top of the league almost throughout the whole season. They were able to dominate many of their matches and whilst there were some outstanding individual performances, the team contained many potential match winners and an enthusiastic desire to win.
The Warminster 3rd XI also had a successful season, finishing in the top half of Division 7 of the Wiltshire County Cricket League. The team won eight and lost six of their fixtures, winning many of their games comfortably, rarely being outplayed and a season remembered for a remarkable number of matches that were only decided within the last couple of overs. The key to their successful season was genuine blend of experience and a highly positive team spirit, providing opportunities for all to be involved.
Club Alex MacDonald commented, “It has been a productive year on and off the field for Warminster Cricket. The senior sides achieved all our pre-season objectives, with both promoted sides maintaining their league status and the 2nd XI winning their league. We have also seen record numbers in our junior hard-ball programme and our All Stars and Dynamos programmes again lead the county in number of participants.
“We have hosted three minor county fixtures which were well attended and the club has continued to invest in our facilities. We are excited to see further developments in 2027 and beyond.
“Many of the improvements made and projects undertaken at the Sambourne Road club wouldn’t have been possible without grant awards from Warminster Town Council, The Fudge Trust and the local Area Board. It is wonderful to have their continued support in building a cricket club that the local community can fully engage with.”
The club would also like to thank all the players, the club sponsors, volunteers, the families who enable their children to take part and the growing number of supporters for all their efforts over the last 12 months.
