Residents got a behind-the-scenes look at the work of their local firefighters during an open evening at Warminster Fire Station.
The station, in Portway, opened its doors on Monday 26th October, giving visitors the chance to meet the crew, watch demonstrations and try using the fire hoses.
The open day marked the start of Warminster Carnival week, raising funds for the annual procession and the Fire Fighters Charity, which provides lifelong care and support to fire service personnel.
Children were also able to climb aboard one of the station’s two fire engines, while firefighters explained the different types of incidents they attend and the fire prevention advice and home safety visits they provide.
Station manager Joel Bailey said the event helped the community understand more about the crew’s work.
“It’s an opportunity to open the doors, invite the community in so they can engage with the crew,” he said.
“They can have a little bit more of an awareness of what we do day to day, the different incident types that we go to.”
Warminster Carnival chairwoman Sandra Major praised the event. “There was excellent attendance, the best the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Station have ever had,” she said.
The event also gave the on-call crew an opportunity to speak to potential recruits. The station’s two fire engines are staffed by on-call firefighters who respond to incidents across the local area.
More information about joining the crew is available at www.dwfire.org.uk.
