Village theatre celebrates 100 years

A village theatre which has entertained generations of locals is celebrating its centenary with a busy schedule of performances and events.

The Woolstore Theatre in Codford is an independent charity theatre run by volunteers. It was established in 1926, when the building was bought by Colonel Sneyd whose wife was a keen actress. They had a stage built and soon after, the Codford Amateurs was formed.

With all the facilities of a commercial theatre, members say they believe the space in the heart of the village is ‘unique.’

Theatre member Will Johnson said, “We believe there are very few villages in the country with theatres in them. The theatre is owned by the members, the support we get from the village is crucial.”

The group was formed after two amateur dramatic groups were running in the village, competing with each other before amalgamating around the 1950s or 1960s to form the group that exists today.

The centenary year has included a packed programme of performances, with Robin Hood in January, an evening of one-act plays in March and Calendar Girls in June all selling out.

Calendar Girls proved so popular that an extra night was added to meet demand.

September saw a performance of Winner Takes All, a comedy by Colin A Barrow about the family of a multi-millionaire squabbling over their inheritance.

Will said, “We were delighted to welcome the playwright to the first night. He tells us that the play has been performed a number of times but this was the first time he has been able to be in the audience.

“We were thrilled with the way the team blended during rehearsals, each of them working hard to produce detailed characterisations. The audiences left the building still laughing after a very entertaining evening.”

Funds for the theatre are raised through ticket sales, a monthly film night and talks.

“We like to have as varied a programme as possible,” said Will. “We do main productions by the theatre group themselves but we try to get various things going on in the theatre as possible. On the first Wednesday of every month we run a film night when we show reasonably up to date films. Recently, we had The Devil Wears Prada 2. These are normally really well attended.”

One member, Marilyn, joined The Woolstore Theatre in the early 70s after being a member of the Warminster Dramatic Society. She said the village was lucky to have its own theatre and a space where members could rehearse from the start of a production. “We draw an audience from a wide area,” she said. “Not only the Wylye Valley but also from Pewsey, Trowbridge, somebody came up from Ilminster.”

The next production will be Songs from the Stage on 24th October, featuring Crescendo della voce performing well-known songs from the West End stage. All profits from the evening will go towards the theatre’s roof fund.

The centenary year will conclude with the pantomime Aladdin in December.

  • Housing and infrastructure top concerns in Warminster survey

Warminster residents have raised concerns that housing development is outpacing local infrastructure, with pressure on roads, schools and healthcare among the main themes of a survey. The survey, carried out by Warminster MP Andrew Murrison, received 517 responses covering housing, local services, public transport, safety, the town centre and other local and national issues. Respondents broadly accepted the need for new homes but repeatedly raised concerns that development has not been matched by improvements to supporting infrastructure.

  • MP explains decision to vote against assisted dying bill

Warminster MP Andrew Murrison has explained his decision to vote against the latest attempt to legalise assisted dying, citing concerns about protecting vulnerable people and the potential consequences for the medical profession and care system.

The House of Commons voted against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill on Friday 11th September, with 286 MPs voting against and 270 in favour.

The Bill proposed allowing terminally ill adults to request assistance to end their own lives, subject to safeguards.

MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they were not required to vote along party lines.

Explaining his decision in a speech in Parliament, Andrew Murrison said, “The first reason I will not be supporting this Bill today is I seriously do not want to live in the kind of society in which we see the frail, elderly and vulnerable coerced into ‘doing the right thing.’

“We can set up panels and judges in chamber and social workers and all the rest of it, but we as humans know how humans work. We know the light side and we know the dark.

“We know that certain groups particularly like to please, to acquiesce, to oblige. We all know constituents like that and we also know that they are often amongst the most vulnerable.”

Dr Murrison, who declared his interest as a recent medical practitioner and active doctor, also raised concerns about the impact on healthcare professionals.

“I do not want the tone and texture of my profession or of any other to be change irrevocably by its involvement in termination.

  • The Woodlanders show set to raise funds for local causes

A group of entertainers in a local village are preparing to perform their new variety show, raising funds for local causes.

The Woodlanders Variety Show will be back with a completely new show in October, celebrating 49 years. The show will run each evening from 5th to 9th October, with a matinee on Saturday 10th.

As part of their performances, the group donates the profits to Frome causes.

Treasurer of The Woodlanders, Sandra Gaisford, said, “Each is a small local charity run on a shoestring and every donation is, therefore, very valuable, sometimes being the difference between continuing their work and being unable to.”

Also an author, Gareth visited Frome last year for a book event and was captivated by the town’s vibrancy and unique character.

He said, “The festival itself has been growing in my mind for some years but I was looking for the perfect location to make it happen. As soon as I came to Frome, I just knew it had to be here.”
