  • Great Bustard nests found in Cranborne Chase for first time

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Great Bustard nests have been found for the first time in a vast protected natural landscape between Warminster and Salisbury.

The bustard – the world’s heaviest flying bird – has been Wiltshire’s county emblem since Wiltshire Council was established in 2009.

Having been hunted to extirpation in the 19th century – the last bird was shot in 1832 – the species was secretly reintroduced to the county in 1998 using chicks from Russia.

Cranborne Chase Landscape Trust has confirmed that bustard chicks had been found in the 380 square mile Cranborne Chase National Landscape last May.

  • A Chance to Sparkle at A.C.T.S. Theatre Arts School

Warminster’s own A.C.T.S. Theatre Arts School has started the new year with renewed energy, welcoming new students and continuing its mission to give people of all ages “A Chance to Sparkle”.

Established in September 2011, the school has built a strong reputation for high-quality performing arts training for young people aged six to 17. Sessions are held on Saturday mornings at Warminster Prep School, offering weekly tuition in drama, dance and singing, as well as regular workshops exploring all aspects of theatre.

“After last term’s visit to Oz (striking while the iron was hot with ‘Wicked’) we have kicked off again for the new year and are welcoming new students,” said founder and director Chris Turner.

  • Readers invited to have their say on Warminster Journal

The Warminster Journal team is inviting readers to take part in a survey to share their views on the newspaper and its online content.

The survey aims to find out what readers enjoy most, what they feel could be improved and what issues matter most to the Warminster community. Feedback will help guide future editorial decisions and shape how local news is covered.

Editor Ian Drew said, “We took over and re-launched the Warminster Journal a year ago and we want to make sure we reflect what people need. This survey gives readers a chance to provide feedback directly and share their views with us.”

The survey is open now and takes only a few minutes to complete. To complete the survey, visit: https://buff.ly/Q97p3jy

To provide feedback outside of the survey, please email news@warminsterjournal.co.uk

The drivers were recorded during speed check sessions on 21st and 22nd January. The road has a speed limit of 30mph. The fastest vehicle was recorded travelling at 46mph in the rain.

“On 21st January, the weather was wet and windy, and roads were wet. It rained on and off during enforcement,” said a spokesperson from Warminster police.

  • Neighbourhood Plan seeks views on housing site allocations

Local residents are being asked to give their views on an updated Warminster Neighbourhood Plan which will help shape how the town develops over the next 15 years.

One of the key issues will be housing, and the Plan will give the local community a say in which sites they might like to see considered for new housing developments.

“The draft Warminster Neighbourhood Plan 2 (2016 to 26) gives our community a direct voice in shaping where new homes are built,” said a spokesperson for the council. “An adopted (‘made’) Neighbourhood Plan, becomes a statutory legal document that planning decisions must take into account.

“Our draft 2026 Plan proposes to allocate two sites for housing development – land East of the Dene (Home Farm) and the old Yew Tree Pub on Boreham Road.

“There are strong benefits to tackling the issue of housing need, but there is also significant local concern, and opposition to the allocation of Home Farm."

  • Poster competition to protect local toads

A poster competition is being run by the Warminster Toad Patrol to raise awareness of the amphibians migrating in the Smallbrook Meadows area.

Participants are asked to design a poster that encourages people to take alternative routes to avoid Smallbrook Road during toad mating season as they use the route to make their way to breeding ponds.

The competition is open to all ages and has three categories: 10 and under, 11 to 18 years old, and over 18.

“Winners will have their poster used locally by Warminster Toad Patrol and will receive a prize bundle sponsored by Button and Squirt,” said a spokesperson from the group.

The winner will be announced at the toad party on 28th February at Lakeside Community Centre.

Entries close on Friday 20th February. To enter, email your poster to warminstertoadpatrol@gmail.com

  • Local parkrun celebrates first anniversary

A local parkrun has marked its first anniversary after a year of weekly 5km events at Thoulstone Park near Warminster.

Thoulstone parkrun marked the milestone on Saturday 7th February. Throughout the year, the event has seen around 6,500 runners completing the course. “It’s been a great first year,” said co-event directors Robin-Mark Schols and Steve Jeffries. “Though circumstances sometimes have not always gone our way, these challenges have given us a learning curve we’ve had to overcome, and we have consistently delivered an enjoyable experience to those who come and take part.”

“We’ve seen the event go from strength to strength, with many lovely comments made by runners both locally and those who have visited from as far away as Australia, which really pay testimony to the hard work put in by all the volunteers that make it happen week in, week out.”

  • Pitch barrier replacement at Warminster Town is complete

It’s been a frustrating time on the pitch for Warminster Town with games against Longwell Green on Saturday 7th February and Wells City on Saturday 24th January being postponed and the Pewsey Vale Wiltshire FA County Cup semi-final on Tuesday this week, 10th February, in doubt as the Journal went to press.

But off the pitch, the club has seen major improvements with the completion of the new pitch-side barrier.

Since the end of December, extensive work has been taking place at the club’s Weymouth Street ground to remove the old, concrete barrier and replace it with a brand-new UPVC barrier built to current Football Association standards.

“We are delighted to get the work completed,” said Chairman James Stone. “This has been a major project for the club; one carried out through the winter months in difficult conditions – and it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together behind its football club."

  • Toad patrol sees surge of support after sign theft

Support for Warminster’s volunteer toad patrol has grown after a toad crossing sign was stolen just a day after it was installed.

The sign was taken within 24 hours of being put in place at Smallbrook during the seasonal road closure to protect migrating toads.

Iain Perkins, a member of Warminster Toad Patrol and Sustainable Warminster, said the theft had only strengthened public backing for the volunteers.

“This week, a toad crossing sign was stolen just 24 hours after it was installed,” said Iain.

“Whether it was a foolish prank or something more malicious, the incident only served to strengthen support for the volunteer patrollers.

“The response from the wider community was heart-warming. A generous resident from Marlborough has since made a substantial donation to ensure the sign can be replaced, turning a negative act into a very positive outcome,” said Iain.
