Charity bowls day raises £1,600 for children’s hospice

A Warminster bowling event featuring a Caribbean meal and African dancing has raised £1,600 for local children’s hospice Julia’s House.

The charity day was hosted recently by Thomas Miller, president of Warminster Bowling Club. The event attracted 50 members and guests, including Warminster Mayor Jack Jones.

Activities began at 2pm with a traditional ‘spider’ game, where players stood with one foot in the ditch and competed to bowl their wood closest to a bottle of whisky in the centre of the green. This was followed by a bowls match organised by Sue Burgess.

The Wellbeing Hub provided a Caribbean meal and later delivered a display of Zimbabwean African dancing. A grand raffle was also held, with the mayor presenting the prizes.

Guests were required to wear colourful clothing for the Caribbean theme. “The most colourful male Mr Mark Kahler, dressed in a magnificent leopard-patterned suit along with cane, was presented with a bottle of wine and the most colourful lady, Kate Millar in a floral dress, was presented with chocolates,” said Thomas.

Overall, £1,600 was raised to support the work of Julia’s House, a cause Thomas consistently chooses to support with his events at the club. The charity provides practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, providing frequent and regular support in their own homes, in the community or at their hospices.

Additional donations were made to the mayor’s charity fund and The Wellbeing Hub on behalf of the bowling club.
