A joyful celebration was held at Wren House care home in Warminster recently, as resident Mary Montagu marked her 101st birthday surrounded by family and staff.
Birthday wishes came from far and wide, but it was the surprise visit from Mary’s granddaughters – along with her very new great-granddaughter – that truly made her day. Four generations came together to share in the special milestone, creating treasured memories across the family.
As a heartfelt gesture, Mary’s grandchildren presented her with a surprise ‘hamper of memories’, filled with items that evoked personal and cherished recollections of their beloved ‘Granny Mere’. The thoughtful gift sparked laughter and fond reminiscences among everyone present.
Reflecting on her big day, Mary said, “It was absolutely amazing. I feel blessed to be surrounded by so much love and affection and the cake was great too.”
Mary has deep roots in the Warminster area. Her connection dates back to the Second World War, when, as a student at the Royal School in Bath, her education was disrupted after the Admiralty requisitioned the school’s buildings in September 1939.
The entire school relocated to Longleat House at the invitation of Lord Bath. Mary recalls the period fondly, remembering her dormitory in the Salon beneath the grand tapestries. Lessons were held in staff bedrooms, on staircases and landings, and even in the great hall — all quite haphazard, she says, but memorable.
After training as a nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, Mary married Drogo, and together they had three children.
The couple later lived in East Stour near Gillingham before returning to Warminster 23 years ago. Following Drogo’s passing in 2010, Mary remained at Plants Green until moving into Wren House in 2019.
To mark Mary’s 101st birthday, Wren House staff and family pulled out all the stops. Relatives travelled from as far as Norway to see Mary and have a lovely lunch in her room. Head chef Nina also made a decorated cake for the occasion.
Mary’s son, Chris, who lives in Warminster, said, “All of the staff took so much care to make it a truly special event. The whole family cannot thank them enough.”
Home manager Tracey Atkins added, “It was an absolute honour to help Mary celebrate such a remarkable milestone. She’s an incredible lady with a wonderful spirit, and we were thrilled to share this joyous day with her and her lovely family.”
