Have your say on local healthcare: Health forum backs surgery’s patient survey

The Warminster Health and Wellbeing Forum has welcomed the launch of a new patient survey by The Avenue Surgery’s Patient Participation Group (PPG), describing it as a valuable opportunity for local people to help shape the future of the town’s healthcare.

The 2025 Patient Survey invites feedback from patients on a wide range of topics, including surgery opening hours, accessibility, the availability of clinicians, waiting times, reception experience, appointment booking, and more general aspects of care. It is available online via the Avenue Surgery website, as well as in paper format at the practice.

The Warminster Health and Wellbeing Forum – a volunteer-led group that promotes awareness of and access to local health and wellbeing services – is urging all patients to take part.

David Reeves, Secretary of the Forum and former Chair of the PPG, said, “We welcome this comprehensive survey which gives all patients the opportunity to express their views – good and bad – of the sole remaining medical practice in Warminster. The survey is easy and quick to complete and allows patients to add comments anonymously, unless they wish to be named.

“I believe this is a worthwhile initiative from the newly re-formed PPG in conjunction with the Practice and ask all patients to offer their views via the survey.”

The Forum says honest feedback is vital in helping ensure the surgery meets the needs of the local community.

For more information or to take part, visit www.theavenuesurgery.nhs.uk or pick up a paper copy at the surgery.

  • Parking restrictions planned across Warminster

Parking restrictions are being considered for several roads in Warminster as Wiltshire Council proposes new ‘no waiting at any time’ measures across the town.

The plans include new double yellow lines on sections of Coppice Close, Deverill Road, Emwell Street, Grovelands Way, Norridge View, Pampas Court, Portway, Upper Marsh Road and Weymouth Street. For more details, see the Traffic Regulation Order to the left on this page.

Warminster Town Council previously endorsed the need for double yellow lines on one side of Weymouth Street, after members of the public and councillors raised concerns about access for emergency services during busy times, as well as traffic congestion.

  • Warminster Lions support local children’s hospice

Warminster Lions Club recently made a donation to Wiltshire’s only children’s hospice to help provide support to families.

The Lions donated £750 to children’s hospice Julia’s House at their open day. The money will go towards supporting several Family Support Service events for Wiltshire families before the end of the year.

The Family Support Service provides regular events throughout the year for parents who rarely have the opportunity to socialise. They offer parents a chance to meet families in similar situations, develop friendships and feel less isolated.

  • Warminster woman creates fundraising calendar for animal shelter

A Warminster woman who owns an animal care business has launched a charity calendar to raise funds for a local animal shelter.

Gemma Sheppard, the founder of More Than Human, a welfare-first animal care business in Warminster, has created a charity calendar featuring images of the animals she looks after. All of the profits from every calendar sold will be donated to Bath Cats and Dogs Home.

Gemma is a graduate in Human-Animal Interaction and Wellbeing, and her calendar also includes monthly welfare themes and reflective questions to help pet owners consider their relationship with their animals and strengthen their bond in 2026.

“I wanted this calendar to not just be cute pictures but also be educational and thought provoking,” said Gemma. “Our animals are sadly only around for a small part of our lives, but to them, we are their whole lives.”

  • Open days return at Imber Village

Residents will have the chance to visit Imber Village at its upcoming open days.

Imber, the ‘lost village,’ will be open from Monday 29th December to Thursday 1st January.

Imber is an uninhabited village within the British Army’s training grounds on Salisbury Plain. The civilian population was given 47 days’ notice to leave their homes in 1943 to provide an exercise area for American troops during World War II. Villagers were not allowed to return after the war, and the village remains under the control of the Ministry of Defence.

  • Local children’s artwork secures school funds

Local pupils have helped secure funding for their schools by triumphing in a Christmas card colouring competition run by a local business.

Grace, a Year 5 pupil at Horningsham Primary School, won the top prize with her countryside entry in NFU Mutual Warminster’s Christmas card competition. Indi, a Year 3 pupil at the school, also won a prize for coming second.

As well as receiving their own awards, the pupils secured £400 of prize money for the school.

Rob Maddocks, an NFU Mutual Warminster agent, presented the prizes to the children in front of the school and parents at an assembly last month.

Rob said, “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with local primary schools for this fun Christmas competition. NFU Mutual Warminster is recognised for its local, community-led ethos. To run a colouring competition with local children therefore seemed a ‘must’.”

  • Mayor’s Christmas message

Christmas is a time of year when we can all be grateful for the good things that we are able to enjoy.

At the heart of the Christmas story is a really important truth: when things are hard and difficult, goodness will always come through in the end.

The original Christmas story is one of great joy and celebration, but also of a tiny baby who was born in extremely difficult and fragile circumstances. We celebrate that birth at Christmas because, whether we proclaim a Christian faith or not, we have learned over the centuries that good always comes through in the end – that is our hope.

It’s easy to say, I know, but it is the lived experience of so many down through the generations. It may not happen overnight, but it usually happens over time!

This is a time of year, also, to stop and give thanks for the good things that we receive and those in our lives who somehow make life easier. I would like to give thanks to my Deputy and all the town councillors and, of course, all of the council officers who are employed in the civic centre and around the town positively contributing to the lives we live in this lovely town.

Andrew Cooper

  • Christmas window competition attracts record entries

Warminster has been lit up with 25 festive windows as part of this year’s Christmas window competition.

Organised by Warminster Town Council, the competition saw a record number of entries this year.

Residents were encouraged to explore the town, view each window and then vote for their favourite.

Votes were cast online and at the Civic Centre, with Slim, Trim ‘n’ Beautiful in George Street taking the top spot and Bloomin Krackers scooping the Mayor’s Choice award.

The Mayor of Warminster, Councillor Andrew Cooper, said, “We thank everyone for entering. It has really brought extra colour and vibrancy to the town. I genuinely think any window could have won.

“The window displays generate a lot of positive publicity and entice people to visit the town for their Christmas shopping."

  • Church community comes together for Christmas bazaar

A local church began its festive preparations by holding a Christmas bazaar to raise funds for the renovation of the church hall.

Parishioners at St George’s Catholic Church worked together to set up and run the stalls and decorate the Christmas tree. They also transformed the cleaner’s cupboard into Father Christmas’ grotto.

“The hall was packed not only with parishioners but also with locals, some visiting St George’s for the first time,” said parishioner Charles Sultana De Maria.

“Father Christmas was a great attraction, with 27 children visiting the grotto. While waiting for their turn to meet Father Christmas, the children were introduced to the real story of the birth of Jesus, with activities at each of the five prayer stations in the church.

“Lots of thanks go to Father Christmas and his elf assistant, Jingles!”
