Hospital charity celebrates 20 years of sponsored walk

How much council tax you’ll pay from April

The 20th annual sponsored Walk of Life is being held on Saturday 23rd May, hosted by RUHX, the official charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath.

The Walk of Life started in 2006 thanks to sisters Nic and Ness who were both determined to raise funds to improve cancer facilities at the RUH.

“Vanessa, known by her friends and family as ‘Ness’, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000,” said Ellie Wilkinson-Brown, the Events & Community Manager at RUHX. “She received her treatment from a fantastic team at the RUH, but during this time was aware that the facilities were out of date and in desperate need of replacing. Ness sadly passed away after the cancer progressed in 2007, but she made Nic promise to carry on their passion for fundraising.

“Nic has kept her promise by leading the Walk of Life every year since in memory of her sister, finding comfort in meeting other walkers who have been through similar journeys.”

Since the event began, walkers have raised over £875,000 for the hospital. This year, the charity is calling on more local people to get involved and hopes to raise over £125,000 to make the total raised at the Walk of Life more than £1million.

The Walk of Life follows the Kennet & Avon canal from Bishops Cannings (near Devizes) to Bath, with walkers able to choose between walking the full 26.2 mile marathon distance or a 16 or 10 mile distance.

Entry is £20 for adults or £8 for children, which includes a t-shirt, refreshments along the route, and a lunchtime BBQ kindly provided by Rapid Relief Team UK.

To celebrate 20 years, RUHX also hopes more people will get involved by signing up to the free ‘do it at home’ option, that allows supporters to choose their own distance, route and date any time in May.

“By taking part, people will be giving back to their local hospital for care received by them and their loved ones, helping to make healthcare extra extraordinary for everyone in Bath, Wiltshire and beyond,” added Ellie.

Walkers can sign up by visiting ruhx.org.uk/walk.

  • Coffee morning supports local charity

A coffee morning has raised more than £150 for a Warminster-based charity.

The event raised money for Warminster Action Group (WAG), a grassroots charity supporting people in Warminster with practical help, connection and opportunities.

“On behalf of Warminster Action Group, I would like to thank everyone who baked cakes and made Easter gifts for the event, and to all those who attended and showed their support,” said Debbie Jolliffe from WAG.

“We are extremely grateful to the United Church for hosting the event for us. It’s so wonderful to see the local community unite to benefit a local charity.”

  • Plans to convert former National Trust property into short-stay accommodation

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

A country house formerly owned by the National Trust could be turned into “high-end short-stay accommodation,” under new plans.

Kindred Living Project wants to turn the former Eastleigh Court and its adjoining stables at Bishopstrow, near Warminster, into short-stay self-catering accommodation for up to 56 guests at a time.

The company also wants to erect a new ancillary pavilion building and swimming pool.

The demolition and rebuilding of a single-storey extension, erected in the 1990s by the National Trust, is also included in the plans. The company also wants to make repairs to the roof and windows.

Kindred Living Project was founded by Anna Anderson and Sam Hampson in 2018 to “create beautiful gathering spaces to encourage connection, celebration, and community.”

  • California Dreaming show to bring West Coast classics to the Athenaeum

Have you ever wanted to go on a musical road trip across the American West Coast?

Well, if so, get yourself down to The Atheneaum Theatre on Saturday 9th May and you’ll get as close as you possibly can without actually leaving Warminster!

The ‘California Dreaming’ Show will give you the chance to travel back through some great classic American music from some of the best decades in popular music.

“The show features a six-piece band with five-part vocal harmonies and is an audio and visual treat with large backdrop video projections for each song that illuminate, Inform and entertain,” said Ian Barrett from the show."

  • Warminster Museum Column: Before the Bell was old

This is a most remarkable photograph. Not only is the Bell not yet the Old Bell, but the Lloyds Bank building has not yet been built.

The date stone on what was until recently, Lloyds Bank, gives the topping out date of 1873, so we can date this photograph sometime around 1871. In 1871, taking a photograph was not a matter of pointing a camera or a mobile phone at a subject and pressing a button. It really was a lot more difficult.

Mr. Smith, who took this photograph, had a studio and dark room in East Street. He probably set up his camera in a suitable position, ensured that a photograph would be suitably well focused, then left an assistant to stand guard over the camera while he went back to his dark room to prepare a glass plate. He prepared the light-sensitive chemical mix and spread this mixture over the surface of the glass plate. He now had about 15 or 20 minutes to take the photograph and to start to develop it. The glass plate with the light-sensitive materials would have been quite useless after about 25 minutes. Yes, this is a remarkable photograph.

  • Shrek the Musical comes to Warminster

Young performers with the Athenaeum Masqueraders are set to light up the stage during May half term with a production of Shrek the Musical.

The family-friendly show will run from Wednesday 27th until Saturday 30th May at the Athenaeum.

“Known for their energy, talent and ambition, the young performers are ready to bring something truly special to local audiences,” said assistant director Claire Dalton.

“This year’s show promises a spectacular experience, complete with eye-catching costumes, an imaginative set and a fantastic song list guaranteed to have audiences singing and dancing along. Bringing the beloved characters of Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and more to life, the production is packed with humour, heart and high-energy performances.

“The Athenaeum Masqueraders have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality theatre and Shrek the Musical looks set to be another standout show. The cast and crew have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to create a fun-filled, feel-good production that will appeal to all ages.”

  • New Warminster studio brings bungee fitness to town

A new fitness studio in Warminster is turning exercise on its head - quite literally.

Velocity Bungee Fitness, based at Norbeck Enterprise Centre, offers classes using suspended bungee rigs that allow participants to jump, glide and exercise with reduced impact on their joints.

“The idea came from a desire to bring something genuinely different to the local fitness scene,” said owner Stacey Holborow. “It’s fun, inclusive and accessible to people who might not feel at home in a traditional gym.”

Stacey opened the studio after trying bungee fitness herself.

“After experiencing bungee fitness firsthand and seeing how empowering it could be, I knew it was something worth bringing to Warminster and the surrounding areas,” she said.
