Live and local: Acoustic nights light up The Old Bell Hotel

Terry Sheppard

The Old Bell Hotel in Warminster is striking a chord with music lovers with their regular series of Acoustic Nights every Thursday – promising laid-back live music, good food, and a relaxed atmosphere that’s just right for winding down the day.

Running from 7pm to 9pm in the hotel’s main bar, the sessions feature local talent from Warminster and the surrounding area.

“The aim is to give a great vibe to enjoy an evening with friends or loved ones,” said hotel owner James Sullivan-Tailyour. “The volume is set so you can still enjoy a conversation, and we wrap up early so you can be tucked up by 10pm!”

The hotel’s kitchen opens from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, serving up a menu of pub classics and Thai favourites – perfect for a pre-show bite or to accompany a relaxed evening with drinks and live music.

As summer approaches, the hotel will also host Sunday Sessions, running from 3pm to 5pm during July, August, and early September. These outdoor events aim to bring easygoing weekend entertainment to the heart of town, giving residents even more reasons to pop in for a pint and a tune.

Details of upcoming acts can be found on the hotel’s website — www.oldbellwarminster.co.uk — as well as on social media under OldBellWarminster.

The Old Bell is also putting out a call for new performers. “We’re always looking for new blood,” said James. “We welcome soloists or duos with a chilled and relaxed playlist – anything from 50s to 90s covers, acoustic rock, country, R&B, bluegrass, blues, singer-songwriters, Americana and more.”

Groups are welcome too. “When we ran The Swan Hotel in Bradford on Avon, we hosted regular sessions that brought together Irish, folk, sea shanty, jazz and country musicians,” James added. “The players loved having a venue, and our customers loved the atmosphere. We’d love to bring that same energy to The Old Bell.”

The Old Bell is in Market Place. For more details, visit https://oldbellwarminster.co.uk

  • Warminster firefighters rescue pregnant horse from garden hole

A pregnant horse was rescued by Warminster firefighters after becoming trapped in a large hole in a garden.

Firefighters from Warminster’s Fire Station were called to a property in Dilton Marsh on the morning of Saturday 27th September, assisted by a specialist rescue team from Poole, following reports of a ‘large animal rescue.’ The horse had become stuck in a hole that had been dug in the garden as part of an ongoing home extension project.

Four horses had entered the garden through a broken fence, but one pregnant horse became trapped in the deep soakaway hole. Firefighters worked carefully to free the animal, using an on-site mechanical digger to widen the area and allow the horse to be lifted to safety.

  • Local veteran takes on Triple Challenge for mental health charity

A local army veteran has successfully completed a gruelling ‘Triple Challenge’ on Snowdon raising more than £1,700 for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness.

Capt. (Retd) Tom O’Brien, Chairman of the Warminster Branch of the Royal Irish Rangers, joined ten other participants from across the country for the challenge which saw them cycle 15 miles, hike up and down Snowdon, and then canoe the length of Lake Llyn Padarn.

Tom raised a total of £1,703, which will go directly towards supporting those struggling with severe mental illness.

“I wanted to raise the awareness of mental health issues, so by doing the challenge and all the build-up work, I had plenty of discussions with lots of different people,” said Tom.

  • Bushcraft workshop for unpaid carers this Halloween

A free bushcraft and campfire cooking workshop will be held this Halloween for unpaid carers in Wiltshire.

The workshop will take place on 31st October, from 9.30am to 4pm, in a woodland near Warminster. The session will include opportunities to build wild shelters in the woodland, master fire lighting skills, make natural cordage and cook food underground over open flames.

“Our new bushcraft workshop aims to give unpaid carers a unique chance to take time for themselves in the great outdoors,” said Martina Gibson, Head of Services and Volunteering at Carer Support Wiltshire, the charity organising the event.

“With many carers seeking the benefits of nature for their wellbeing, the workshop offers a refreshing alternative that allows carers to relax, connect, and recharge while learning new skills together.”

  • Frome hosts South West’s largest camera and photographic fair

Frome will once again play host to the South West’s largest celebration of all things photographic when the Frome Wessex Camera & Photographic Fair returns to the Cheese and Grain on Sunday 19th October.

“If you’ve never been to a photographic camera fair, you’re missing a treat,” said David Chedgy from the Frome Wessex Photographic Club. “The prices are low, and you’ll find cameras, lenses and lots of other photographic accessories.

“Camera fairs are very friendly places and the stallholders will be pleased to give help and technical assistance on cameras and photographic equipment.”

  • Warminster School governor launches children’s adventure book to support local families

The Chair of Warminster School governors and former pupil has published a children’s fantasy adventure book to support the school’s Bursary Fund and help local families.

All profits from author Beverley Sunderland’s book, The History Gate Adventures: Giants and Dragons, will go towards Warminster School’s relaunch of its 1707 Bursary Fund, which provides a range of bursaries, including scholarships.

Beverley describes the book as a fantasy adventure about a brother and sister, Jack and Rosie, who attend a school which only admits children who have a fundamental belief that everyone is good at something, and want to find what that is.

  • Warminster Museum Column

All towns are unique. Some towns are special. Warminster is unique and special.

Warminster has a very special name. A minster, like a monastery, was a centre for monks, but there is an important difference. The monks in a monastery tend to keep themselves away from the world and spend much of their time in prayer and study.

The monks in a minster were required to spread the gospel to the surrounding area, and they set up crosses in marketplaces and other suitable places, where they would preach their message to the local people who were rarely Christians. We are talking of the time when Pope Gregory sent Augustine, along with a group of monks, to recruit Christians to become missionaries and bring the message to the pagan Anglo-Saxons.

There is scholarly debate about whether the church in Warminster was a minster. It was established in an open area, close to a supply of fresh water, and these conditions would be far more necessary for a large establishment than for a simple church.

The little river, coming from the area around Cley Hill, flows close to the church, but it flows through fairly flat country. Under these conditions, a small river has to find its way “down” as best it can. It does not have the energy to force a straight line, and the result is a stream that meanders. Streams like this are said to be serpentine. They resemble a snake, and an old word for a serpent was a worm (possibly pronounced “warm”).

  • SPOTLIGHT ON: Wessex MS Charity Shop

The Wessex MS Charity Shop, based in the Three Horseshoes Walk, proudly holds the title of being Warminster’s only independent charity shop.

Run entirely by a dedicated team of around 18 volunteers, the shop is open six days a week and offers something for everyone, from clothing for men, women and children, to toys, records, electrical goods, shoes, and an ever-changing selection of bric-a-brac.

The shop is also home to a wonderful community of loyal customers who love to pop in for a browse and a friendly chat. Many even bring their four-legged friends along, knowing there’s always a dog treat waiting behind the till. Once a week, shoppers are greeted by Stanley, the shop’s much-loved four-legged volunteer, who is always ready to welcome customers at the door with a wagging tail.

With a focus on affordability, the shop prides itself on keeping prices low, ensuring there is always a bargain to be found while supporting a local cause. The sign behind the till says, “The Wessex MS Therapy Centre Shop is an independent charity shop and run entirely by volunteers. Every penny raised in this shop goes to the charity, helping people with MS live a better quality of life.”

  • Sustainable Warminster: A year in the orchard bears fruit as apple pressing begins

After a summer of light pruning on the community orchard and thinning of the fruit to produce a better crop, October sees the culmination of all the work done over the past year: the pressing of the apples.

The volunteers hire equipment from the Codford Community Orchard group, consisting of a scratcher that loosely chops the fruit and a water-pressurised juicer. It is a dynamic, lively process where many hands can help and is still wonderful to see the juice pouring out even before being switched on.

Laxton’s Superb, Bedwyn Beauty, Worcester Pearmain, Katy, Egremont Russett and Roundway Magnum Bonham are just some of the varieties that will be pressed. A separate one will be done for the two types of Redlove – these have a deep red flesh and juice to match.

The orchard’s fruit will be collected on Friday 10th October, from 2pm. The pressing will take place on the Orchard on Saturday 11th October, from 11am to 2pm, by Boreham Road. If you have apples you would like to press, please bring them along. Also, remember to save containers for this (plastic ones will freeze), as we cannot provide them.
