Local student honoured for 100-day charity challenge

A student from Warminster has received an award from his college for completing a 100-day running challenge for the Samaritans, raising nearly £2,000.

Archie Heywood, 19, was awarded Travel and Tourism Student of the Year at Wiltshire College and University Centre.

The challenge saw Archie run 5km every day for 100 consecutive days starting on 1st January, raising funds for the Samaritans and awareness of mental health after receiving support from the charity during a difficult period last year.

He said, “Last year I had some mental health struggles, so I thought instead of just letting it weigh me down, I’d do something good, raise some money and spread awareness.

“Everyone struggles with something, so you never really know. It’s about spreading awareness that it’s okay to speak to people.”

Archie was among 22 students to receive awards. He now hopes to study airline and aviation management at university before gaining experience abroad and pursuing a career in the industry.

The Student Awards ceremony took place last month, and began with a performance from student band CORA. Floral arrangements created by the horticulture team at the college’s Lackham campus helped transform the venue for the celebration.

Principal and Chief Executive Iain Hatt then welcomed students and guests, including Dr Andrew Murrison MP and Leader of Trowbridge Town Council, Councillor Mel Jacob.
