Local team step up training for Everest challenge

Local adventurers are well on their way to the challenge of a lifetime as preparations intensify for the ‘Westbury & Warminster to Everest 2’ expedition.

Following a series of presentations earlier this year, 48 people initially registered their interest in joining Major Rab Lundie’s 2026 trek to Everest Base Camp.

After months of training and team-building, that number has now refined to a confirmed group of 22 trekkers, who will travel to Nepal in May 2026 to tackle the world-famous route to Everest Base Camp (17,598 ft) – and, if conditions allow, continue upwards to Kala Pattar (18,519 ft) to watch the sun rise over the highest mountain on Earth.

“The team has an average age of 52 and is a great mix of men and women from all walks of life,” said Rab, a serving army officer based in Warminster. “Most are first-time trekkers, with a wide range of fitness levels. In 2017, most of the team were from Westbury, but this time we’re really pleased to have a good number from Warminster too.”

Training for the challenge began earlier this year with the theme ‘Train as we Trek’.

Rab explained, “When you trek at very high altitude, you simply can’t walk at the same pace you would back in the UK. Even on day one, when we land at Lukla Airport – known as the world’s most dangerous airport – we’re already twice the height of Ben Nevis. That’s when some start to feel the effects of altitude. So, in our UK training, we aim to replicate the slower pace we’ll need in Nepal.”

Over the past six months, the team has tackled a series of local treks across the hills of Westbury and Warminster, focusing on team bonding and pace awareness. “It’s been brilliant to see everyone gel,” said Rab. “We’ve had kids and even dogs join us on many of the walks, which has really helped inspire the next generation too.”

The group has also completed three major training events – on the Jurassic Coast at Durdle Dor, at Pen y Fan in South Wales, and most recently reaching the highest point on Dartmoor. Conditions were often far from kind, with driving rain and strong winds testing both kit and morale.

“These events combined with some horrendous wet and windy conditions, especially on Pen y Fan have taken most of the team right out of their comfort zones,” said Rab. “It has shown them the need to invest in quality kit and equipment but mostly how to operate as a team.”

As winter approaches, the team’s schedule continues with local walks and tougher challenges at Cheddar Gorge and, early in the new year, a planned trip to Snowdonia.

“Our training in the UK will best prepare everyone to get to the start point in great shape,” added Rab. “That said, the team is under no illusion that there are other factors we cannot train for such as extreme altitude, fear of heights and high bridges, small crazy dangerous airports, being away from family and loved ones for three weeks and trekking for 12 consecutive tough days which will take many of them to the peak of their mental and physical abilities.

“At this stage we are in a very positive position to achieve our aims to get to the base camp and then up to Kala Pattar to sit and watch the sunrise.”

Although registration for the trek has now closed, Rab says he’s open to exceptional individual enquiries from anyone who wants to join the trek.

“I could be convinced with individual cases,” he added. “Anyone interested can email me at rabcniz@hotmail.co.uk to arrange a call.”

The ‘Westbury & Warminster to Everest 2’ expedition follows Rab’s successful 2017 trek, when 22 of 29 local participants reached Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar.

When Rab gets the team to the top of Kala Pattar he will leave them and return to Everest Base Camp on his own for a mandatory two days of further acclimatisation before participating in the Tensing Hillary Everest Marathon (THEM), the highest marathon in the World.

The THEM is conducted on the day (29th May) when Everest was first summited by Sherpa Tensing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. With only 20 UK participants and a limit of 250 runners from across the World, Rab feels super privileged to eventually get a slot. “Training for the THEM is ramping up but like the trek, running at 18,000ft with 50% less oxygen across challenging terrain and in cold conditions will be super tough,” he said.

Immediately after the marathon Rab will rejoin and lead the team back to Lukla to conclude this epic adventure.

  • Carer’s Cafe relaunches at local care home

Warminster’s monthly Carer’s Cafe will relaunch next month at Henford House Care Home.

The Carer’s Cafe will now be hosted in partnership with Carers Together Wiltshire, who have taken over running the group from the charity Carer Support Wiltshire, which closed last month.

The first session will take place on Monday 20th April from 10.30am until 12pm. Sessions will then take place on the third Monday of each month.

“This is a great opportunity for carers or people who may become carers in the future to meet others, share experiences with one another and get help and advice from trained caregivers,” said Patricia Alton, General Manager at Henford House. “We are inviting everyone to come along and have a coffee and chat to others are carers or who are concerned about caring for a loved one”.

  • Young runner raises thousands with 100-day challenge

An 18-year-old from Warminster has raised almost £2,000 for the Samaritans by running 5km every day for 100 days.

Archie Heywood began the challenge on 1st January and will complete his final run on 10th April. He chose to raise money for the Samaritans after receiving support from the charity during a difficult period last year.

“It feels great to be nearly at the end of the challenge. I feel like the 100 days have flown by, and I’m proud of myself for keeping going and spreading the message and awareness of men’s mental health,” said Archie.

“My main motivation to keep going has been the fact that I’m raising money and awareness for a charity that has helped me. Each run I think about how the money is potentially saving lives and that every penny goes towards helping someone who was struggling like me."

  • Learn more about local hospital charity at AGM

Residents are being invited to attend the Friends of Warminster Hospital’s (FOWH) Annual General Meeting to hear updates on fundraising, volunteering and support for local health services.

The AGM will take place on Thursday 23rd April at 6.30pm at the Warminster Civic Centre. Light refreshments will be available.

“There promises to be much discussion on what’s been happening during the last 12 months and an opportunity to come up with any fundraising ideas for the future,” said a spokesperson from FOWH.

“The aim of the FOWH is to promote and enable the provision of health facilities to patients within Warminster and the surrounding villages, as well as encouraging the recruitment of volunteers. In addition to the Longleat Ward, the hospital offers outpatient services which may be accessed by referral from local GPs.”

  • Residents invited to share views on waste and recycling services

Wiltshire Council is asking residents to share their experiences to help shape future waste and recycling services, including plans to move to three-weekly household waste collections.

The council’s survey will run until Friday 17th April, gathering feedback on current household waste and recycling habits, use of Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) and residents’ views on service changes, including the move to three-weekly general household waste collections, alongside new weekly food waste collections coming in 2027 and additional recycling options.

The council says residents’ feedback will be used to shape future waste and recycling services, identify concerns and support needs during any service changes and improve communications.

Cllr Paul Sample JP, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, said, “We are aiming to increase recycling rates in Wiltshire from 40% to well over 60%. We know that changes to waste and recycling services will raise concerns. This survey is an important opportunity for residents to tell us what works for them, what doesn’t and what support they will need. Their feedback will help us shape communications and improve our service delivery.”

The South West’s largest camera and photography fair is returning this month to the Cheese and Grain.

The Frome Wessex Camera and Photographic Fair will be held at the venue on Sunday 19th April, with over 30 stands selling all things camera and photography-related.

Organisers say, “There will be cameras both digital and modern, collectable, lenses, filters, flashguns, film, paper, books and old prints.

“If you’ve never been to a photographic camera fair, you’re missing a treat. The prices are low and you’ll find cameras, lenses and lots of other photographic accessories that you’ve been searching for.

“Camera fairs are very friendly places and the stallholders will be pleased to give help and technical assistance on cameras and photographic equipment."

  • Council rejects transfer of ownership of local churchyard

Warminster Town Councillors have voted against taking over the ownership and maintenance of the churchyard at Christ Church.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) requested the closure of the churchyard on Weymouth Street in September, and asked the town council to take over its ownership and management last month. A closed churchyard has no space for new graves but existing family plots can still be used where space allows.

At a Full Council meeting on Monday 23rd March, councillors rejected the transfer due to concerns about the lack of information on costs and maintenance requirements.

Warminster Town Council already manages the closed churchyard on Boreham Road, but Town Clerk Tom Dommett said the Weymouth Street site was “a very different proposition” due to more complex maintenance needs.

In a letter, the PCC described the churchyard as in “fair condition.”

  • Women’s group launches in Warminster

A new social group launched in Warminster earlier this month, with almost 40 women attending the first session.

The first meeting of the Women of Warminster (WoW) group took place on Wednesday 1st April, where attendees were introduced to the committee and made and decorated Easter boxes.

“We had a thoroughly enjoyable inaugural meeting of WoW,” said Chair Mel and Secretary Sandra.

“Whilst constructing and decorating little boxes for Easter eggs, laughter and chatter filled the room as the ladies met new people and caught up with friends. The evening was deemed a huge success, with lots of positive feedback.”

  • Teen footballer signs for Premier League academy

A local teenager has been signed to Premier League side AFC Bournemouth’s U15 academy.

Anderson Tieman, a student at Kingdown School, was offered the position following an eight-week trial at the club. He is now training three to four times a week with professional youth coaches and will be competing against top southern clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea.

“I was really made up and excited to join a premiership club,” said Anderson, who plays as a centre back. “It’s very hard at present, as I’m 14 and currently playing against older boys then me. However, it is getting me prepared for what the future holds.

“I really want to go through all the age groups at Bournemouth, that’s 16s, 18s then to U21s through to the first team. Bournemouth really want to bring people through its academy to reach the first team. I hope I will be fortunate enough to get there!”

  • Warminster man jailed for large‑scale money laundering and drug supply

A man from Warminster has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment for his role in moving cocaine, cannabis and cash around the country.

Shay Girvan, 22, formerly of Station Road, Warminster, was arrested following an extensive investigation by Wiltshire Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit.

Det Constable Jared Yalden said, “Girvan was a trusted lieutenant, heavily involved in the movement of large quantities of cocaine, cannabis and cash and his jail sentence reflects his position within the group and the role he played.”

Another man, Charlie Savage, from Standerwick, near Frome, was also sentenced to 12 years for his role in heading up a large-scale organised crime group and being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and money laundering offences.

As well as the lengthy prison sentences, both Charlie Savage and Shay Girvan will be subject to proceeds of crime orders where their assets will be subject to confiscation over the coming months.
