Military Wives Choir to perform Christmas concert

The Warminster Military Wives Choir will sing at a festive concert featuring Christmas songs and carols. 

The event will take place on Saturday 13th December at 7pm at Christ Church. Doors open at 6.30pm. 

Drinks and mince pies will be available, along with a Christmas raffle. 

“Please join us, our guest soloists, and the choir of St George Catholic Primary School as we perform our favourite Christmas songs and carols for you,” said founding member, Sarah Gilbody. 

Tickets cost £10 for those aged 16 and over. Children go free.

A limited number of tickets will also be available on the door.

  • Local people recognised in New Year Honours List Two people from the Warminster area have been recognised in the New Year Honours List, which highlights the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK. Richard Clothier, a third-generation cheesemaker, was awarded an MBE for services to sustainable agriculture and food production. Barbara Thomas received a British Empire Medal for her voluntary work supporting residents in Mere through community and youth charities. Richard is the Managing Director of Wyke Farms, which combines traditional cheesemaking with a focus on environmental responsibility. He said, “Receiving an MBE is an immense honour and a very proud moment for my family and the team here at Wyke.   • Warminster Museum Column: East Street It is possible that you have never given a lot of thought to East Street. It is, after all, just a busy street bringing lots of traffic to town and taking lots of traffic away from town. But is that all it is? Most certainly, it is not all that it was. Until the early 1800s, there were two mansion houses in East Street. One of these was the home of the wealthy Halliday family. The Hallidays owned quite a large area on the north side of East Street, and their mansion house home was in the area that is now Buttons Yard. They left this house sometime after 1801 and moved to one of their other properties, Yard House, a little way further West. Yard House is still there, but the original mansion house was demolished, and it does not appear on the next map dated 1836. The second mansion house was East End House, and it appears on the 1886 OS map. It was a very grand affair, sitting in extensive grounds. The entrance to this property is shown on the map as “gate”. The gate no longer exists, but the drive entrance is still there. It is the opening on the left of the filling station. East End Avenue cuts right through the site of the house and it is possible that householders on this section of East End Avenue will find bits of East End House in their gardens. Boomerang Family Entertainment Centre on Bowerhill first opened in August 1995 with the aim of providing a safe place for children to play and a welcoming space for parents to relax.   • Wiltshire bus shelters to get biggest investment in 20 years By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison Bus shelters in Wiltshire are to get their biggest investment in 20 years, following a windfall of government cash. At a meeting of Wiltshire Council’s cabinet on last month members heard that between £6 and £8 million could be spent on bus shelters and infrastructure thanks to funds from the Government’s Local Authority Bus Grant. The council has around 4,000 bus stops and 800 bus shelters, many of which are in a poor state of repair. “We’ve had no real significant investment in bus infrastructure for up to 20 years and now we’ve got around about £8 million to spend up to the year 2029/30,” said Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways. Nick Murry, who chairs the council’s environment select committee, said his committee had questioned whether “the significant number of bus stops maintained by town and parish councils might be included,” and was told they would be considered.   • Jane Austen celebrated at library’s fan club performances Special performances celebrating all things Jane Austen are due to be held at Warminster Library. The Jane Austen Fan Club’s show will celebrate Jane Austen books, weaving together the world of Austen’s classic novels with an exploration of gender, relationships and money today. Organisers say, “With books, bonnets and a life-size cardboard cutout of Colin Firth, we’re celebrating everything we love about the original feminist icon. “Created by Victoria Briggs and Lucy Mellors, you can expect high drama, breathless romance and extremely proficient dancing." The show is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The performances will run on Tuesday 10th February, Thursday 26th February and Thursday 5th March.   • Bike parking facility upgrade aims to encourage more cycling New Streetpod bike storage facilities have been installed outside Warminster Library to encourage more cycling in Warminster. The new user-friendly parking, installed by Warminster Town Council, is now available to use for up to six bikes. The new units are Certified Secure Diamond, the highest level of UK bicycle security standard, endorsed by police and allow secure locking of the frame and both wheels with a single lock. The Climate Strategy Working Group had previously identified that cycling to the town centre would reduce carbon emissions. A public consultation was conducted to gather feedback on cycling habits and parking needs, with respondents highlighting concerns over the security of bicycle racks. Read more on our website.   • Local man urges others to join charity trek A local man who took part in a fundraising trek to Mount Everest Base Camp last year is urging people to join him on his next expedition. Mervyn Parrish, from Corsley, was part of a group that raised £15,000 for the Samaritans when they set out to trek to Everest Base Camp in October last year during a freak blizzard. He is now encouraging local people to join him in his next challenge, a five-day trek across the Sahara Desert. The challenge will take place later this year, from 10th to 17th October.
