Porcupette arrival makes Longleat history

Porcupette arrival makes Longleat history

A prickly new arrival has been born at Longleat, marking a first for the park.

Staff at the safari park near Warminster have welcomed a baby North American tree porcupine, otherwise known as a porcupette, in the last month. Yet to be named or the sex determined, it is thought to be one of only three North American tree porcupines born in the UK in the last 12 months.

The new arrival was born to mum Fennel and dad Mango – both first-time parents. Porcupettes are born with soft quills to allow the mother to give birth, but these harden into regular quills within hours of birth.

Samantha Peeke, Animal Adventure keeper at Longleat said, “We’re really excited for this arrival as it’s something we as keepers have been waiting a long time for. Fennel and Mango really hit it off when they were introduced last year and it’s amazing to already have a little porcupette with us.”

Porcupettes are born with their eyes open and quickly are able to move around by themselves. Longleat’s new arrival adventured out of the nest box at less than a day old. The young creature will begin eating vegetables at around two weeks old and will be fully weaned by three months old.

Samantha added, “The little one was spotted attempting to climb branches and chew on trees, although they were a little wobbly at first and definitely need more practice. It’s common for the mum to leave their young at the bottom of the tree whilst they go and forage. Fennel has been doing incredibly well as a first-time mum and has been protective of her baby as we would expect.

“Mango won’t have too much interest in the porcupette, instead he’ll be much more interested in his dinner!”

  • Seed library opens to support local biodiversity

Residents can now pick up free seeds from a new initiative at Warminster Library.

Visitors can take up to two packets of seeds per household to plant in their garden from the new seed library, with contributions donated by local gardeners and companies.

“Everyone is welcome to take seeds to grow at home and is asked to donate any spare, saved, or unwanted seeds to help the collection grow,” said a spokesperson from Warminster Town Council, which is supporting the project.

“Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, it’s a great way to share, find a new hobby and support local biodiversity.”

People can donate vegetable, flower, legume, herb and grass seeds. Unopened or partially used commercial seed packets are also welcome, as well as any seeds saved from people’s gardens, provided they are clearly labelled. Treated seeds or anything invasive or toxic should not be donated.

  • Sustainable living fair to inspire greener choices

A community sustainable living fair will take place this month, inviting residents to explore practical ways to live more sustainably.

The free event will be held on Saturday 18th April from 12pm to 3pm at Warminster Civic Centre.

The fair will bring together local organisations, businesses and community groups to showcase eco‑friendly products, sustainably made goods and lifestyle solutions that benefit both the planet and personal well‑being.

Rebecca from Sustainable Warminster, which is putting on the event, said, “Attendees will have the opportunity to discover products and services from local businesses, sustainable products made by makers and artists, get free energy‑saving advice to help reduce household bills and learn about community initiatives that are making a positive environmental impact and working toward a healthier, more sustainable future.

  • New kindness charity to work with local schools

A charity aiming to create a culture of kindness in schools has been set up to work with schools across Wiltshire.

Kindwaves launched on 14th March and will work with schools to explore how kindness and positive relationships can be strengthened in the school environment.

The charity was founded by Masha and David following the death of their daughter Heli, who died by suicide.

“Our story is a very sad one,” said Masha. “It is necessary that we need to work with a lot more kindness. We are founders lost our daughter to suicide; this is a tough background.

“Through working with our own bereavement, we started being approached by parents and educators – we just said we want more kindness, more kindness towards ourselves and individuals."

  • Petition launched to save fortnightly bin collections

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

A petition to save fortnightly bin collections in Wiltshire has been launched.

Earlier this month, a cross-party group of Calne-based Conservative and Reform UK county and town councillors launched the county-wide Say No to 3-Weekly Bins campaign.

The campaign opposes Wiltshire Council’s plans to reduce the collection of residual household waste from once a fortnight to once every three weeks from 2027.

At the same time, waste contractors will begin weekly food waste collections and soft plastics recycling which, argues the council, will reduce the amount of refuse in residual rubbish bins.

The council says it can save £3.4 million by moving to a three-week residual waste cycle.

But the campaigners say the move will hurt “those least able to absorb the impact,” including “elderly people managing chronic illness, families with young children, carers supporting relatives with disabilities, and households already under financial strain.”

  • Volunteer takes on walking challenge for local rescue charity

A Warminster woman who volunteers for Wiltshire Search and Rescue will set out on a 125km walking challenge this month to raise money for the charity.

Sharon Evans will walk 16km a day between 12th and 19th April, covering 125km in total, to raise money and celebrate the charity’s 25th anniversary.

“The charity supports emergency services in difficult situations,” said Sharon. “All search and rescue technicians, trustees, and non-operative support like me are volunteers, and they juggle careers, family and being on call 24/7.”

Earlier this month, a team from the charity was called to assist Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedics in rescuing a boy who had fallen down a 200ft slope at the Westbury White Horse. Twenty-five volunteers attended the scene, and the boy was successfully rescued with no life-threatening injuries.

“My fundraiser is to support the medical team and dog team, as I have been a dogsbody for two years,” said Sharon. “We help the search dog train and qualify, which can take up to 18 months of training, all voluntarily, under a qualified Search and Rescue Technician.”

  • Youth work leads to decrease in anti-social behaviour

Detached youth work in Warminster has contributed to a significant decrease in youth anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the town.

The work, carried out by the Warminster Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), involves officers engaging with young people in public spaces.

There were just 13 reports of ASB in Warminster in December 2025, compared to 30 in December 2024. In November, there were 12 reports, down from 28 in November 2024, and in October there were 10 reports, down from 27 the previous year.

“We did a lot of work around youth ASB,” said Inspector Lou Oakley from the NPT. “We had detached youth work funded in Warminster, and I do think it has played a big part in reducing some of these figures. There’s been other work as well, and we’ve done a lot with our schools, but I do think it has had a real impact."

  • Warminster Journal marks first anniversary since relaunch

The Warminster Journal is celebrating its first anniversary since being relaunched and returning to the community after being saved from closure.

The 144-year-old newspaper was at risk of closure when previous owners ceased printing in December 2024. Wiltshire Publications, a family-run newspaper group, took over and brought it back as a free fortnightly publication in March 2025, delivering over 9,000 copies to homes and businesses across Warminster and offering a dedicated digital edition online.

Editor Ian Drew said, “It’s been a great first year since we took over the Journal. The response from the community has been amazing, and we’ve loved covering everything from local achievements and events to stories that matter to residents.

“We’d like to thank all the local groups and organisations who have shared their news with us, and especially the businesses whose advertising support makes the paper possible. Their backing ensures Warminster continues to have a newspaper dedicated to the town.”
