  • Retailers sell knife and alcohol to under-16s in test operation Three local businesses sold age-restricted items to under-16s during a test purchasing operation carried out as part of Sceptre, the national campaign to tackle knife crime. The Warminster Journal accompanied a team from Warminster Police and three 16-year-old police cadets on a test purchasing operation in Warminster and Westbury for the Knife Crime Awareness Week of Action. The police cadets attempted to purchase knives and alcohol from local shops, with the aim of the operation being to educate local businesses and increase their vigilance and awareness when selling age-restricted items to young people. Three out of the nine national retailers that were visited failed the test purchase, despite having Challenge 25 policies in place. Two businesses sold the cadets alcohol, despite seeing ID which stated they were underage. One business sold a Stanley knife to a cadet, having failed to ask them for any form of ID.   • Local orchestra to host Christmas concert with a twist The popular annual Christmas concert from the Warminster Philharmonic Orchestra returns this month with a cowboy theme. The event is taking place on Saturday 13th December at 7.30pm at Thomas Arnold Hall in Warminster School. Raffle and refreshment sales will support the Warminster branch of Cancer Research UK. The programme features iconic Americana, including Copland’s Rodeo, music from The Big Country, The Magnificent Seven, Ecstasy of Gold, and selections from Dances with Wolves, paired with carols and other festive favourites.   • Reverse advent calendar appeal launched for Warminster Foodbank A local estate agency has launched a festive appeal encouraging residents to donate items for families facing hardship this winter. The Warminster office of Cooper and Tanner is running a ‘reverse advent calendar’ in aid of Warminster Foodbank which started on 22nd November and runs until 15th December. Instead of opening a traditional advent calendar, supporters are invited to contribute goods that will be packed into boxes of 24 items for delivery to the foodbank on 16th December. A reverse calendar asks participants to set aside one item a day, though the team says donations of any size are welcome. Staff will combine contributions into full boxes ahead of Christmas.   • Thai twist offered for festive diners A Warminster restaurant is adding a Thai spin to its menu as Christmas bookings gather pace. The Old Bell, which hosts the Thai Chilli restaurant, is offering a range of Thai choices alongside its traditional Christmas fayre for both its eight-course Christmas Day dinner and its Christmas family and office parties. “As the Old Bell has a Thai Restaurant, ‘The Thai Chilli’, we felt we could not miss out on the opportunity to offer our customers some alternative options alongside the traditional Christmas fayre,” said owner James Sullivan-Tailyour. “And it is proving increasingly popular with more than one in three of our guests on Christmas Day deciding on one of our Thai options. “This Christmas Day we are offering an eight-course menu complete with starters, consommé, entrees, sorbet and desserts. As well as our traditional options such as Roast Turkey, Honey and Orange Duck Breast and Caramelised Pork, we are also offering a Spicy Seafood Delight and a Green Curry, together with a choice of vegetarian dishes.   • New affordable homes delivered in Warminster The builder behind the Jubilee Gardens development in Warminster has handed over the latest tranche of properties to a local housing association. Persimmon Homes Wessex have formally transferred 15 homes to Selwood Housing on the second phase of the major site, with 13 designated for shared ownership and two for affordable rent. The handover was marked on site alongside Wiltshire Councillor for Warminster West, Russell Hawker and Warminster Mayor, Andrew Cooper. Jubilee Gardens will provide 1,000 new homes in the area once complete, 300 of which will be for a housing association.   • Toy range unveiled at local book store A long-established local book business has added a new toy section and will open on Saturdays throughout December to help shoppers in the run-up to Christmas. A wide choice of toys, film and TV merchandise, model cars, games and collectibles is now available at Zardoz Books & Records at its unit in Mill Lane, Hawkeridge, near Westbury. “If you’re looking for a stocking filler or last-minute gifts, come and see what we’ve got,” said owner Maurice Flanagan. “It’s great that Westbury now has its own toy shop and I think you might be surprised about just what we’ve got here. “We recently bought out another Westbury trader’s stock so besides our usual books and records, we have new TV-related toys and gifts, including Bendy figures, Funko Pop items and toys, keyrings, pictures and mugs from Marvel, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and other films.   • New defibrillator installed at football ground A new public-access defibrillator has been installed at the home of Warminster Town Football Club, offering round-the-clock support for cardiac emergencies and strengthening safety for visitors and the wider community. The device has been fully tested and certified and is available 24 hours a day to players, volunteers and supporters, as well as residents living nearby. The project has been funded in full by the Premier League Stadium Fund and the Football Foundation, whose investment in grassroots football continues to assist local clubs.   • Military Wives Choir to perform Christmas concert The Warminster Military Wives Choir will sing at a festive concert featuring Christmas songs and carols. The event will take place on Saturday 13th December at 7pm at Christ Church. Doors open at 6.30pm. Drinks and mince pies will be available, along with a Christmas raffle. “Please join us, our guest soloists, and the choir of St George Catholic Primary School as we perform our favourite Christmas songs and carols for you,” said founding member, Sarah Gilbody.
