  • Warminster bids to become UK’s first Town of Culture Warminster has taken the first step in its bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture in 2028, with the town council submitting an expression of interest to the national competition. The new Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) competition gives towns a chance to win up to £3 million to deliver a cultural programme in 2028 of around six months. The first stage involves submitting an online plan which may be awarded £60,000 in funding to work up a more detailed set of proposals. Tom Dommett, Warminster Town Clerk, said, “The aim of the competition is not to judge which town has the best cultural offering at the moment but to decide which town could most improve its cultural offer if it was given the ultimate prize of £3 million."   • Seminar series launches at Wellbeing Hub A series of seminars at the Wellbeing Hub Warminster will bring community voices and professional research together. The first session takes place on Saturday 25th April from 12pm to 5.30pm, with events planned every two months. The hub is a growing research centre built around four pillars: social and cultural inclusion, research and healthcare, research and development and ecotourism and international conservation. The seminars aim to spark discussion around these themes, combining professional insight with residents’ experiences. “The whole point of these seminars and of the research centre is to bring community voices and professional researchers together,” said Dr Charity Chenga, who co-founded the hub alongside Lydia Moore. “Community members are really busy doing a lot of things and also, they have an experience and understanding of things that researchers and professionals don’t have an understanding of. It’s lovely to bring everyone together to actually discuss some of these issues and have a place where people feel they can express these things so that they can filter from professionals into communities."   • Dementia charity memory walk to return to Warminster A fundraising walk for a local dementia charity is returning to Warminster this May. Beyond Dementia’s ‘A Walk to Remember’ will take place on Saturday 9th May, with residents invited to take part. Walkers and runners will have a choice of two routes: the 7.5-mile Battlesbury Circuit, a more challenging trek that takes participants through Smallbrook Meadows, up Middle Hill and Battlesbury Hill before returning to the finish, or the Meadow Mile, a gentle one-mile stroll around Smallbrook Meadows, ideal for families or anyone seeking a shorter route. Money raised will help the charity support people living with dementia in Wiltshire, including those who attend the Old Silk Works day club in Warminster. Community Fundraising Manager Rachel Fear said, “After a three-year break, we’re delighted to welcome back our Memory Walk to Warminster. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to support people living with dementia while connecting with our local community, and we hope you will join us for what promises to be a truly fantastic event.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Splash pad to reopen with extended opening hours The splash pad in Warminster’s Lake Pleasure Grounds will open for the season on Friday 24th April with extended opening times. The popular attraction will be open daily from 10am to 6pm, an extra hour compared to previous years. The attraction, which opened in 2022, has several water features and has attracted thousands of visitors since opening. “The Lake Pleasure Grounds and splash pad are loved by the people of Warminster and we’re delighted to open for an extra hour this year,” said a Warminster Town Council spokesperson. “Make a day of visiting the park and enjoying our wonderful community space.” The nearby Pavilion Parlour is open seven days a week, selling ice cream, drinks and snacks as well as splash pad accessories.   • Warminster young carer elected to UK Youth Parliament A young carer from Warminster will take their voice to the national stage after being elected to the UK Youth Parliament, marking the latest step in a growing role representing young people. Kit Hopkins has cared for their mum Sarah since the age of four, supporting her through multiple long-term health conditions including polycystic fibrosis dysplasia and brittle bone disease. Kit was elected to the Young Carers Council before joining Wiltshire Youth Council in February and was selected for the Youth Parliament last month to champion the views of young carers and represent Wiltshire on a national scale. “Ever since I was younger, I knew I wanted to make a positive difference in our local community and help create a place people are proud to live in,” said Kit. “I never knew how I would be able to make that difference, but I have now taken that first step towards my goals of making Wiltshire a much better environment. “I want to make changes that will benefit everyone: children, teenagers, adults, parents, the elderly, people with disabilities and learning difficulties and anyone who decides to visit wonderful Wiltshire.” Read on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • ‘Roarminster’ set for dinosaur invasion this summer! Warminster is set to be transformed into ‘Roarminster’ this summer as a free family dinosaur trail comes to town. Five dinosaur models will be installed at various locations across the town from early July. The free exhibition is set to run for the duration of the summer holidays, with events scheduled throughout. “Roarminster is about creating something fun, memorable and family-friendly for Warminster,” said Deputy Mayor Jack Jones. “The dinosaur trail will encourage people to explore the town centre while supporting local businesses.” Read on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Concert to raise funds for young musicians A special concert at the Athenaeum is set to bring an evening of varied and uplifting music to local audiences while raising funds for young musicians. The concert will take place on Sunday 26th April. Proceeds will go towards the Brickhill Trust for Music, part of the Sheila Toomey Award, to support opportunities for young people in music. “The performance will be led by classical-crossover pianist Richard Lennox, whose repertoire ranges from Bach to The Beatles, alongside musical theatre and rock ’n’ roll favourites,” said a spokesperson from the Athenaeum. “He has previously appeared in the West End production of Wicked, at the Royal Albert Hall’s Prom Praise, and on BBC Songs of Praise."   • Warminster Museum: Hatchet Corner If we look at a map of Warminster town, it is clear that Market Place is much wider than East Street. The pavement on the South side (Old Bell side) runs without serious interruption in a straight line from Market Place into East Street, but on the North side the pavement has to turn two right angles to pick up East Street, and this produces a corner. For many years the Hatchet Inn stood on this corner between East Street and Market Place, and the area was known as Hatchet Corner. The Hatchet burned down sometime before 1740, but although the Hatchet was replaced by three houses, the area was still referred to as Hatchet Corner. The picture shows the area in about 1909, shortly before the First World War. Making way for Station Road had involved demolishing the buildings around Hatchet Corner. The corner itself, with the inn standing on it, would been almost exactly where the drinking fountain is standing in the picture. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
