Thousands attend ‘wonderful’ Warminster Independent Summer Market

Thousands of residents and visitors headed to Warminster town centre to enjoy the Warminster Independent Summer Market on Sunday 29th June.

Sunshine, a variety of exciting stalls, a new food court and entertainment filled the High Street, Market Place and the Civic Centre with a buzzing atmosphere from 10am to 4pm.

Warminster Town Council worked in conjunction with Warminster Business Network to organise the event, which featured a record number of stalls and huge footfall across the town.

Tom Dommett, Warminster Town Clerk said, “Another really wonderful event for Warminster. We thank the thousands of visitors for visiting the town, exploring the market and enjoying the day as well as the team of people putting on the event.

“It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the event, the new food court and new stalls. We are very proud of the independent markets and remain committed to organising regular events for the Warminster community that benefit the whole town.”

The independent markets have quickly grown in popularity, championing local business and have established themselves as must-visit popular events for all.

The next independent market will be held in Warminster on Sunday 31st August with the Christmas event held on Saturday 29th November.

There is also a busy summer of events in the Lake Pleasure Grounds including Inspire music festival on Sunday 6th July, Warminster FEASTival 11th to 13th July, 80th Anniversary WW2 Show 26th to 27th July and Ice Cream and Bubbles festival on Saturday 2nd August.

  • Wiltshire College & University Centre opens doors to prospective students following record-breaking open events

Wiltshire College & University Centre is welcoming prospective students and their families through their doors this winter and spring, following its most successful programme of open events to date.

More than 2,000 people attended the College’s autumn open events across the four campuses and its specialist University Centre at Castle Combe, with strong interest from young people, adults and parents exploring their next steps in education.

Building on the momentum, the College is hosting a further eight open events across January, February and April, giving prospective students the opportunity to meet lecturers, tour facilities and receive guidance on courses, apprenticeships and university-level study.

Feedback from the autumn events reflected a high level of satisfaction with the overall experience, with many visitors describing the events as welcoming, informative and reassuring. This was matched by strong levels of engagement and confidence, with up to a third of visitors applying on the day and many more saying they plan to apply soon.

  • Wild beavers thriving at Longleat

Two beaver families have successfully bred kits at Longleat, with the young captured on camera.

Wild beavers were first found on the estate in 2020, after the species was successfully reintroduced across the UK.

“The beaver population at Longleat has grown from just two families in 2020 to four families in 2025,” said Dr Tom Lewis, Head of Conservation and Research at Longleat. “We had evidence of one family successfully breeding, however, camera trap videos show two of our beaver families happily eating and grooming each other.”

Beavers are still considered endangered in England, but local populations are increasing due to the natural expansion from established areas.

The young beavers will stay with their families for around two years before dispersing to find a territory of their own in the local area.

  • Celebration evening recognises local students

The achievements of students at Kingdown School were recognised at their annual celebration evening last month.

The evening brought together students, families, staff and governors to celebrate hard work, perseverance and success across the school community.

Throughout the event, awards were presented to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic progress, commitment to learning, and a positive attitude both in and out of the classroom. Special recognition was also given to those who have shown resilience, determination and personal growth.

“The celebration evening was a reminder that achievement comes in many forms,” said Headteacher Helen Carpenter. “From academic success to personal milestones, each student recognised has worked tirelessly and should be immensely proud of what they have accomplished.”

  • Warminster Lions raise £1,500 for local charities

Warminster Lions Club has raised £1,500 for local child-based charities over the Christmas period, from events including the annual Santa Float.

The float appeared in Warminster on 12 evenings throughout December, with volunteers braving cold and rainy conditions. A total of £680 was raised from public donations during the float, which will be combined with funds from the Lions stall at the Christmas Independent Market and donations from Warminster School’s carol service.

The money will be split equally between three local charities, with each receiving £500: Julia’s House; Yes You Can toddler group who are based at Christ Church Hall in Warminster; and Warminster Rugby Club for new equipment for their junior sessions.

“The club members really enjoyed escorting Santa round the town and local villages again this year,” said Lions President Ros Harrison. “It is such a well-received, popular and fun tradition."

  • Athenaeum reports a strong year and welcomes new leadership team

The Athenaeum has reported a financially successful year despite ‘some challenging headwinds’.

The Trust which runs the centre held its AGM on Saturday 3rd January and members heard a report of the year and plans for the year ahead and appointed a new leadership team.

“Despite some challenging headwinds, we have had a financially successful year, which has allowed us to make some significant investments in stage technology and energy efficiency measures,” said the outgoing chair Jon Ellis.

“This will not only help us to control our costs (energy being particularly painful), but also we believe we are now one of the best technically-equipped theatre venues in the South West, which we hope will attract more visiting acts, and contribute to audience enjoyment."

  • Breast screening campaigners call for ongoing community support

Campaigners calling for the mobile breast screening unit to be brought back to Warminster are urging residents to continue signing a petition as they press NHS England for firm commitments on future decision-making.

The mobile service was withdrawn from Warminster last year after being based at Morrisons car park. The Wiltshire Breast Screening Service cited antisocial behaviour, including people banging on the side of the van during treatment sessions, as one of the reasons for the decision.

Over 1,000 people have signed the petition calling for the reinstatement of the unit in the town, and those leading the campaign want reassurances that any future consultation over the service will not take place without proper engagement with local people.

David Reeves, from the Warminster Area Health and Wellbeing Forum, who has been campaigning with town councillor Liz Lee, said they had been told NHS England would liaise with the town council as planning work begins for the 2028 screening programme.

  • Plan to convert town centre offices into flats

Plans have been submitted to change the use of first-floor office space in the town centre into residential accommodation.

The proposal involves converting the office space to residential use, along with internal alterations to create a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom self-contained flat.

The Grade II* listed building at 38 Market Place currently has shops on the ground floor. Planning documents state that the first-floor offices are no longer required for their current use and that the conversion would make more efficient use of existing town centre space.

Wiltshire Council’s conservation officer has recommended refusal of the application, stating there is insufficient information to fully assess the impact of the proposals on the Grade II* listed building.

In their report, the conservation officer said the application “suggests a scheme that would be harmful to significant features”.

Warminster Town Council members unanimously objected to the plans, supporting the conservation officer’s concerns. Councillors agreed that listed buildings within conservation areas should receive special attention to preserve their setting and special architectural or historic interest.

Wiltshire Council is due to decide on the application by 20th January.
