A 20mph speed limit could be introduced in the town centre, with the town council exploring options to reduce speeds on key roads.
Following further discussions at the Highways Advisory Committee on Monday 1st September, the town council has recommended to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Groups (LHFIG) to consider a 20mph speed limit on Emwell Street, George Street, Silver Street and Sambourne Road (to the current 20mph zone) plus Market Place.
The cost estimate is £12,250, and the town council would have to contribute at least 25%. LHFIG will now consider the proposal and make a recommendation to the Area Board.
“The original enquiry was put forward by a local resident who was concerned about speeding,” said Cllr Andrew Davis.
“Traffic counters went down, and it was reported to the LFHIG a few meetings ago that certain parts of the town do meet the criteria for a worthy 20mph speed limit, either because of speeding or for people’s safety.
“The locations that did meet the criteria are Sambourne Road, Silver Street, George Street, and Emwell Street, and we’re going to pursue adding on the High Street and Market Place.”
The town council hope that speed limits will improve both safety in the town centre as well as ambiance for visitors.
