Town up to eighth after another home win

Warminster Town produced another impressive home performance on Saturday as they welcomed high-flying Odd Down to Weymouth Street, with the visitors arriving as early title favourites.

What followed was a fantastic encounter, with Town setting out from the opening whistle to take the game to their opponents.

Warminster created a flurry of chances during an impressive first-half, but were unable to find the breakthrough. Odd Down goalkeeper Alfie Kelsey was called upon to make a number of saves, while a combination of stray efforts and mistimed chances also kept the visitors on level terms.

Despite Town’s dominance in spells, the score remained 0-0 at half-time.

In recent weeks, Warminster have been left frustrated after failing to capitalise on opportunities and struggling to regain the same momentum after the interval. This time, however, was different.

Town came out for the second-half with renewed drive and continued to pile pressure on the Odd Down defence. The pressure eventually told just after the hour mark when Warminster were awarded a contentious penalty.

With the responsibility on his shoulders, Walton stepped up. Having been the hero in front of the Weymouth Street crowd the previous week, the midfielder kept his composure from the spot and fired the penalty home to give Town the lead.

Warminster continued to look the more dangerous side after going ahead and pushed for a second, with Odd Down forced to defend resolutely to keep themselves in the contest.

Town could have added to their advantage, but some good defensive displays from the visitors prevented the scoreline from reflecting the pressure Warminster had applied.

The final whistle eventually confirmed another important three points for the Town and a second consecutive home victory.

The result also extends Warminster’s impressive recent run to just one defeat in their last seven matches and sees them climb to eighth place in Division One.

After a difficult start to the campaign, the Town are beginning to build some real momentum, with performances such as this showing the progress being made under the new management group.
