Warminster appoints youngest ever mayor

Warminster has a new mayoral team for the year ahead, with its youngest ever mayor elected at the age of 36.

Councillor Jack Jones has been appointed mayor and Councillor Elizabeth Lee appointed as his deputy at the Full Council meeting on Monday 11th May.

“Thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me by electing me as Mayor,” said Cllr Jones, who is a lifelong Warminster resident with a passion for sport, the environment and youth issues. “It is a true honour to serve this town and the people who make it such a fantastic community.

“When I became deputy mayor, I said it was an honour to serve and that I was committed to supporting our community, championing local voices, and helping to create a town that is inclusive, vibrant, and forward-thinking. Those values remain at the heart of everything I aim to achieve in the year ahead.

“It is also a privilege to take on this role as the youngest mayor in Warminster’s history. I see this not just as a personal milestone, but as a reflection of the opportunities within our town – that with commitment, passion, and a willingness to serve, anyone can play a part in shaping our future.

“Warminster is a town defined by its people – by the volunteers, local organisations, businesses, and residents who care deeply about where they live. My role as mayor will be to represent you, to listen, and to work collaboratively to continue improving our town for everyone.

“I will do my very best for and by the people of Warminster, and I look forward to putting even more back into this community we are all so proud of.”

As deputy mayor, Cllr Lee remains determined to ensure residents have fair and equitable access to essential health services as she continues to fight to restore a mobile breast screening unit in the town.

As a lifelong Warminster resident, she is passionate about helping shape the future of the town. She has a deep connection to the local community and is a willing advocate for small businesses, particularly those operating outside the traditional high street.

  • E-bike seized and teen arrested in Warminster

Wiltshire Police have seized an illegal e-bike and arrested a teenager for traffic offences following targeted police work in Warminster.

Officers from Trowbridge Team 3 attempted to stop three youths riding illegal e-bikes in the Bradley Road area of Warminster on Friday 15th May. Police said the riders ignored directions and made off from the scene.

During the attempted stop, officers were able to identify one of the individuals involved, a 16-year-old boy.

The following day, the teenager was arrested on suspicion of four traffic offences, including driving without insurance. A search was authorised during which officers located and seized an illegal e-bike linked to the incident the previous evening.

  • Police cadet unit launches in Warminster

A new police cadet unit has opened in Warminster, with 14 young people attending the induction session.

The new group was supported by cadets from the Trowbridge and Chippenham units, as well as volunteer leaders.

Cadets took part in team-building activities such as constructing spaghetti and marshmallow towers and engineering cup pyramids using only string and rubber bands.

“The Youth and Early Intervention Team have worked really hard to get a fourth cadet unit open in the county,” said Cadet Unit Leader PCSO Melissa Culliford.

“This marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the young people who have joined us, helping us bridge the gap between young people and the police. They will help represent their community by being at the heart of it.”

  • Cricket season is underway but Warminster sides are victim of the weather

The weekend of May 2nd saw the start of the 2026 cricket season for Warminster Cricket Club, but unfortunately the rain also made a reappearance.

After an incredibly successful season last year, resulting in promotion to the West of England Premier Cricket League (Wiltshire), the Warminster 1st XI travelled to Corsham to play the Corsham 2nd XI.

Warminster won the toss and elected to bat first. Batting was never going to be straightforward this early in the season and whilst several of the team managed to build the foundations of an innings, wickets fell at regular intervals. Warminster were finally dismissed for 144 runs.

With the rain on the horizon, the Warminster bowlers responded quickly, taking two early wickets, but the game was abandoned with the Corsham 2nd XI response at 36 runs for the loss of two wickets.

  • New outdoor spa village opening this summer at Bishopstrow Hotel

A major £2.5million redevelopment of the spa at Bishopstrow Hotel & Spa near Warminster is set to be completed this summer.

The hotel, part of Kaleidoscope Hotels, is transforming its existing spa into an expanded indoor and outdoor ‘wellness hub’ which is due to reopen in June or July.

The new-look spa is centred around an outdoor spa village and will include a 14-metre swimming pool, an eight-metre hydrotherapy pool, a spacious outdoor sauna and a cold plunge bath, hot tubs, outdoor studio cabanas and an outdoor bar. Fitness sessions, sauna classes, therapies and spa treatments will be offered, alongside popular forest bathing, the traditional Japanese practice launched by the hotel earlier this year.

Managing Director Jonathan Walker said, “By integrating our new outdoor spa village within the landscape, we hope to invite people to reconnect with nature, focus on their wellbeing journey and be curious to the transformative power of the outdoors."

  • Primary school celebrates tag rugby success

A team of Year 5 and 6 pupils from Sambourne CE Primary School has been crowned champions at the West Wilts Tag Rugby Tournament.

Teams from 16 primary schools took part in the event at Trowbridge Rugby Club, with Sambourne competing in the Small Schools category against seven other local schools.

“It was an incredible day of unbeaten rugby throughout the group stages that saw them through to the final and overall victory,” said teacher Steven Morgan.

“The children showed a great understanding of the game and incredible sportsmanship throughout.”

  • Warminster Museum: Celebrating Sunday schools

“Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work” – and in the early days of the Industrial Revolution, the workers really did work, six days a week and 12 or more hours a day.

Even worse, until 1802 there were no laws covering child labour. Small wonder that Little Boy Blue fell asleep under the haystack when he should have been looking after the sheep.

There was an improvement with the 1802 Act. No apprentice must work for more than 12 hours in any day. This did not cover Little Boy Blue; he was not an apprentice.

It is obvious that, to the workers, the seventh day was very valuable. Until 1888, the law stipulated that everyone should attend church on this day. Fortunately for many people, the law did not stipulate which church or what denomination and by the 1800s it was becoming very loosely enforced. People used this day to unwind, in whatever way suited them best. And some of these ways were very antisocial.

  • Veterans raise funds for air ambulance

Local veterans came together to raise funds for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance at a recent charity games night.

Groups from the Royal Irish Rangers, the Royal Green Jackets, the Royal British Legion, the Conservative Club and the Wyvern Warriors competed and raised £220 for the charity. The Royal Irish Rangers were the overall winners.

“On the night, the air ambulance team gave a brief update on all the great work that they carry out across the county and further afield,” said Captain Tom O’Brien.

“A massive thank you to the Conservative Club for hosting an excellent evening. Well done to our local veteran community, who over the last few years have raised some much-needed funds for local charities and organisations.”

  • Local nursery puts flavour first!

Simpson’s Seeds has opened its plant nursery in Horningsham for the season, with a wide selection of tomato, cucumber and courgette plants now on sale.

Aubergines, melons, chillies and sweet peppers will follow as the growing season progresses.

Owner Matt Simpson says ‘Putting Flavour First’ is the guiding idea behind the nursery, which specialises in tomatoes and peppers.

“It’s not just the classic tomatoes we do, such as Gardeners Delight; we have many of the new, blight resistant types too,” said Matt. “The tomatoes come in all colours: yellow, orange, pink and even black and vary from the sweetest cherries to great, big, juicy beefsteaks. Chillies vary from very mild to fiery hot. Each year we try out new varieties and those that pass the ‘Taste Test’ make it into our comprehensive catalogue.

“This is our third season at our new home in Chapel Street where we have built a haven for lovers of tomatoes, chillies and other treats for the kitchen garden. We’re still in Horningsham, but just have a different view. Quite a few people still try to find us at The Walled Garden before realising we have moved.”
