A Warminster woman celebrated her 102nd birthday surrounded by multiple generations of her family.
Mary Montague marked the occasion with friends, family, residents and staff from Wren House care home. She was surprised by a visit from her granddaughters and recently born great-granddaughter.
Mary, who has lived at Wren House since January 2019, has deep roots in the Warminster area dating back to the early days of the Second World War, when she was a pupil at the Royal School in Bath. After the school buildings were requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939, pupils were relocated to Longleat House at the invitation of Lord Bath.
Following her school years, Mary trained as a nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. She later married her husband, Drogo. Together they had three children: Christopher, Robert and Rosamond. In later years, the couple lived in East Stour, near Gillingham, before returning to Warminster in 2002.
Reflecting on her birthday, Mary said, “It was absolutely amazing. I feel blessed to be surrounded by so much love and affection.”
When asked about the secret to her long life, she said, “To be taken care of and to be truthful. My darling husband took care of me, and now the staff at Wren House do.”
Tracey Atkins, home manager at Wren House, said, “It was an absolute honour to celebrate Mary’s 102nd birthday with her and her wonderful family. She is a truly special lady and a much-loved member of our Wren House community.”
