Warminster Town searching for first league points after opening two games

Warminster Town are still searching for their first Western League points of the season after defeats in their opening two league fixtures.

Town began their campaign away at newly promoted Nailsea United, but a sluggish opening ultimately proved costly as the hosts claimed a 3-2 victory.

Nailsea started with plenty of energy and intensity, and Warminster struggled to match the hosts in the early stages. Town found themselves 3-0 down before Ben Snell gave the visitors a lifeline, pulling one back before half-time to make it 3-1 at the break.

A much-improved second-half display saw Town fight their way back into the contest, with Snell once again finding the net, this time with an excellent strike from long range to make it 3-2.

Warminster pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages and came agonisingly close when a header at the back post presented a huge opportunity to level the game. However, the chance couldn’t be converted and Nailsea held on for all three points.

Town were back at Weymouth Street the following week, taking on Mendip Broadwalk — a side who have proved something of a bogey team for Warminster in recent seasons.

The visitors took the lead inside four minutes from the penalty spot following a controversial incident. An offside decision from the assistant referee was waved away by the referee, with a penalty subsequently awarded and converted by Broadwalk.

From there, Warminster spent much of the afternoon pushing for a way back into the game. Town huffed and puffed but couldn’t find the breakthrough, despite creating opportunities.

The best chance fell to Tyson Pollard, who found himself with a point-blank opportunity, only to see the Mendip goalkeeper produce an excellent save to keep his side ahead.

That proved to be the decisive moment as Broadwalk held on to take all three points with a 1-0 victory.

It’s not the start to the league campaign Town would have wanted, but there have been signs of encouragement within both performances, particularly the character shown to fight back from 3-0 down at Nailsea and the pressure applied against Broadwalk.

With a long season ahead at Step 6, Town will now look to turn those performances into points.

Next up is an FA Vase trip to Midhurst & Easebourne before league action resumes on Tuesday, 18th August, when Town travel to Longwell Green.
