Residents can explore Warminster’s historic buildings for free this September as part of Heritage Open Days, a national festival celebrating history and culture across England.
Dents will welcome visitors on Saturday 12th and Friday 18th September at 11am and 2pm for a 45-minute talk about how gloves are made and the history of glove making, followed by a 30-minute museum tour. The tour is suitable for those aged 12 and over.
The Athenaeum, Wiltshire’s oldest working theatre, will run a walking tour on Sunday 20th September from 2pm. The tour includes steps which may not be accessible for all.
Organisers say, “This walking tour covers the main rooms of the building, plus the cellars, lighting box and stage.
“A commentary on the history of the building and its features is given en route. Access to some areas is subject to availability on the day. There will be a display of archive documents and photos in the gallery.”
Warminster Maltings is hosting tours on Friday 11th and Friday 18th September at 10am and 2pm. The tours will highlight the architecture and history of the Grade II* listed buildings, which date back to the 18th century, and explain how malt is made. Tours will also feature a visit to the Warminster Maltings museum.
St John’s Church will open on Sunday 13th September from 3pm for a talk on its striking collection of Pre-Raphaelite mosaics, which adorn the walls of the chancel and nave.
The Minster Church of St Denys will welcome visitors for guided tours on Saturday 12th September at 12pm and 1pm. The Minster Church is the oldest in Warminster, with a history dating back to Saxon times.
St Lawrence Chapel will be open on Sunday 13th September from 10am to 4pm. Guests can explore the chapel’s history, recent improvement projects, Grade I listed organ, stained-glass windows and its historic 13th-century tower.
