Westbury Golf Club is swinging into the new golf season with exciting developments, including the appointment of a new PGA Golf Professional, the opening of a pro shop, and the much-anticipated re-opening of the club’s driving range.
Appointment of a golf professional and the opening of a pro shop
Chris Tyson has been appointed as the PGA Golf Professional and Coach, opening an on-site pro shop. He is now available for lessons for both members and visitors.
Chris started playing golf and competing as an amateur in North Yorkshire in the 1980s, where he was fortunate enough to be coached by Steve Robinson, the current performance coach for Matt Fitzpatrick and the England women’s national squad. Chris turned professional in 1991 and qualified as a PGA Golf Professional in 1994; following which he has competed in and won a range of local, regional and national tournaments, including competing in the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Chris is eager to share his expertise with the local golfing community. “I have recently moved with my family to Wiltshire, where I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my mission to improve both your skill and your love of golf at Westbury Golf Club,” he said.
“I am now offering coaching and playing lessons on the golf course, as well as coaching on the driving range. In the pro-shop, a range of major brand products will be available to buy or can be sourced for you, along with other accessories needed to play. I also offer a re-gripping service.”
Driving Range now re-opened
After a 6-month break, the driving range has re-opened, benefitting from an improved drainage system that has been installed. This upgrade ensures better playability year-round, allowing members and visitors to fine-tune their swings in all seasons.
The course itself is set in mature parkland at the foot of the famous White Horse, located at the White Horse Country Park. The club prides itself on being an inclusive venue for golfers of all abilities.
Bob Rawlings, club secretary, commented, “It’s great to see the way the club is progressing and with increasing membership and pay and play golfers, now seems the appropriate time to expand our golfing offer. We have always prided ourselves on offering affordable quality golf facilities, and with the driving range reopening, this sets us up really well for the future.
“Westbury Golf Club is a members run, not for profit community sports facility. It is a nine-hole parkland course that attracts both experienced golfers and those seeking a leisurely swing. It’s not just about conquering the greens, it’s about the camaraderie, the fresh air, and the joy of the game. And guess what? No five-mile uphill treks here – just pure golfing bliss!
“With well-tended greens and gently undulating fairways, the course suits players of all ages, whilst providing a good test of golfing skill for players of all abilities. The nine holes can also be played as 18, with two different tee positions for each hole. The course is made up of five par-3 holes, ten par-4, and three par-5 holes. The full course measures 5,684 yards from the white tees.
“With membership priced at £400 for full access, it’s a steal. Junior membership (18 and under) is a mere £55, and student membership (24 and under) is only £130. How do we keep fees so low? It’s simple, the club’s organisation and administration are in the capable hands of its own members.
Non-members are very welcome with pay and play prices starting at £15.”
