IN the mid 1800s, towns began to improve local health care by providing cottage hospitals for those who could not afford to attend the few and distant hospitals.
Our first hospital was a converted farmhouse close to Portway. There is, sadly, no photograph of the original Cottage Hospital, but these photographs show its later development.
