Athenaeum rooflights lifted in by crane

Athenaeum rooflights lifted in by crane

A dramatic rooftop delivery was needed in Warminster as a giant pane of glass was lifted over the roof of the Athenaeum as part of the theatre’s energy-saving upgrade.

The Grade II-listed building has received a grant for energy efficiency improvements, helping it cut costs and better serve the local community. Among the upgrades is the replacement of two ageing, single-glazed rooflights.

However, a challenge arose when one of the large panes turned out to be half an inch too big to be carried up the three storeys inside the building – prompting the need for a crane lift.

Local firm BC Roofing was enlisted to supply and install the bespoke units, which replaced the original rotting softwood frames.

“Billy and his team at BC Roofing had to crane it into position over the roof,” said chair of trustees, Jon Ellis. “It was a heart-stopping moment whilst the pane was hoisted up, with the wind seemingly stronger than down on the ground!

“However, both units were successfully installed without further incident and will contribute to reducing heat-loss through the roof.

“This is part of a number of energy-saving measures we have been able to implement this year thanks to a successful grant application, and I’m indebted to BC Roofing for their advice, support and ingenuity in completing this part of the project.”

The funding was made possible through the government’s VCSE Energy Efficiency Scheme that has provided support to community organisations and charities. The administration of these funds is managed on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) by community charity, Groundwork. The scheme is funded as part of a package of over £100million of support being delivered by the government to help frontline delivery organisations with the increased cost of living.

  • Cycling challenge raises £4,000 for motor neurone disease charity

Hundreds of cyclists have raised £4,000 for motor neurone disease research and support by taking part in a charity ride from Longleat.

The Lionheart Sportive returned on Sunday 11th October after a decade away, with 300 cyclists choosing between 100-mile and 100-kilometre routes through the hilly Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. The event was organised by Frome cycling shop Pronto Bikes.

This year’s ride raised money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research into motor neurone disease (MND) and supports people affected by the condition. MND is a rare, progressive disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

  • Breast screening campaigners submit formal complaint

Campaigners have submitted a formal complaint over the decision to remove the town’s breast screening unit and the way its relocation was handled.

David Reeves, of Warminster Health and Wellbeing, submitted the complaint to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. He has been supporting a campaign led by deputy mayor Cllr Liz Lee for more than a year to secure the unit’s return.

The complaint raises four concerns, including an alleged failure to consult the local community, a lack of access to data used to justify moving the service to Westbury, and the classification of facilities such as running water and clinical waste disposal as essential rather than desirable requirements.

This is another one of the many great pictures that we have in the museum. The sun is high, the direction of the shadows suggests about 11am, and it really is all going on. The many coaches have luggage racks on their roofs, so a lot of people must be planning to go somewhere and stay there for a while.

  • Local artist finds inspiration at Warminster Town FC

A Warminster resident has been combining her passions for football and drawing by capturing the action through sketching at local matches. The resident has been attending matches at Warminster Town Football Club, to practice her sketching skills while supporting the local club.
“I decided to go along because you don’t get too much of a chance to draw, particularly people,” she said. “I have been drawing and sketching for about 30 years and this gives me an opportunity to have a go at some live sketching and really having to think fast, watch fast and observe fast.”
Unlike drawing a person who is sitting still, sketching footballers means trying to capture their movements and positions before they change. She said, “You don’t get the same picture as somebody who’s moving and you’re noticing positions and everything like that.
