A local army veteran has successfully completed a gruelling ‘Triple Challenge’ on Snowdon raising more than £1,700 for the mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness.
Capt. (Retd) Tom O’Brien, Chairman of the Warminster Branch of the Royal Irish Rangers, joined ten other participants from across the country for the challenge which saw them cycle 15 miles, hike up and down Snowdon, and then canoe the length of Lake Llyn Padarn.
Tom raised a total of £1,703, which will go directly towards supporting those struggling with severe mental illness.
“I wanted to raise the awareness of mental health issues, so by doing the challenge and all the build-up work, I had plenty of discussions with lots of different people,” said Tom.
“I have known some very special people who have been affected by mental issues, and I know that Rethink works so hard all year round to support those in need.”
Tom, a veteran himself, is especially concerned about how these issues affect those who have served. “It is known that veterans suffer from mental health issues, especially after active service, but it can affect anyone at any time and it does not discriminate,” he said. “I feel more needs to be done to support all the families who support their loved ones through this illness and Rethink plays a big role in this.
“The canoeing for me was the toughest part of the challenge,” he said. “It was completed in pairs and we started off by going around in circles!
“I was happy to complete the challenge, knowing that there were some very kind people who had donated to Rethink. Together we are all making such a difference.
“It is so important to have access to resources and support; that’s why I took part in the event – to help Rethink continue its mission of improving the lives of those affected by severe mental health issues.”
