Local resident sparks ideas for park entrances

David's design for the pedestrian entrance

Design suggestions for the Lake Pleasure Grounds entrances have been submitted to the council by a Warminster resident, sparking new ideas for how they might look.

David Carpenter, a landscape painter who moved to Warminster in March last year, was inspired after reading a Warminster Journal article about the council seeking new tenders for the park entrances.

“I went down and took some photos and had a wander around,” said David. “You don’t really notice the entrances, but the park itself is lovely. To me, it feels like a kept secret that Warminster has, so I had to put my two pence in.”

“As a designer and painter, it piqued my interest, so I drew up a couple of sketches. I hope they can be of some help or maybe spark some new ideas. I didn’t want to go too over the top. You can’t come up with crazy ideas because they’ll never afford it, but it’s just small things that I thought would make a difference.”

David submitted three designs: one for the pedestrian entrance, one for the vehicle entrance, and one for inside the grounds.

Tom Dommett, Town Clerk at Warminster Town Council, said, “David Carpenter’s ideas are great to get people thinking. Even rough ideas and outlines are welcome, as these can be refined into a deliverable project. Some people might be thinking of ornate wrought iron, others of an archway – there are plenty of ideas out there.”

No design has been decided on yet for the entrances, and the council is encouraging more residents to get in touch with their ideas, designs and opinions.

  • New Warminster studio brings bungee fitness to town

A new fitness studio in Warminster is turning exercise on its head - quite literally.

Velocity Bungee Fitness, based at Norbeck Enterprise Centre, offers classes using suspended bungee rigs that allow participants to jump, glide and exercise with reduced impact on their joints.

“The idea came from a desire to bring something genuinely different to the local fitness scene,” said owner Stacey Holborow. “It’s fun, inclusive and accessible to people who might not feel at home in a traditional gym.”

Stacey opened the studio after trying bungee fitness herself.

“After experiencing bungee fitness firsthand and seeing how empowering it could be, I knew it was something worth bringing to Warminster and the surrounding areas,” she said.

  • Tribute to Warminster woman as two men jailed over fatal collision

The family of a ‘loving and creative’ Warminster woman killed in a road traffic collision three years ago have paid tribute after two men were jailed for dangerous driving.

Ella Cook died in a collision on the A36 in Claverton on 15th April 2023, aged 26.

Two men from Warminster, Lewis Glasby and Alfie Cook, were jailed after the court heard they had been racing one another before the collision.

Glasby, 23, of The Beeches in Warminster, and Cook, 22, of Brook Street in Warminster, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Cook received a prison sentence of nine years and four months at Bristol Crown Court on Friday 10th April. Glasby received a prison sentence of nine years.

On behalf of Ella’s family, Kai Poa-Tams, Ella’s fiancée, said, “Ella was a deeply loving partner, daughter, sister and friend. She gave herself completely to the people she cared about, always putting others first with a warmth that made everyone feel safe, valued and understood.

“She had a natural way of bringing people together, and her kindness left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know her.

“Ella was also a valued and dedicated member of staff at NHS Blood and Transplant, progressing through her career with remarkable determination."

  • Women-only studio unveils low-impact fitness sessions

Spring is always a great time to try something new, and that’s exactly why Hebe-Fitness, a local female-only fitness studio, is launching a brand-new class this month.

Balance and Burn is designed specifically for women seeking a more mindful alternative to high-intensity workouts.

“It offers a fresh, holistic approach to exercise,” said Stacey St John Marchmont who is owner and head instructor at the studio in The Cornmarket in the centre of Warminster. “It focuses not just on physical strength, but also on stability, control and mental clarity, creating a well-rounded experience for both body and mind.

“Blending controlled precision, resilience-building exercises, core strengthening and mindful movement, the class delivers a dynamic yet accessible workout.

“At its heart are Pilates-based exercises that target the core - the foundation of all movement. Through controlled, low-impact techniques, participants can strengthen deep abdominal muscles, improve posture and develop long, lean muscle tone. The emphasis is firmly on precision rather than speed, helping to reduce the risk of injury while still achieving effective results."

“Warminster Toad Patrol have extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated towards replacing their sign on Smallbrook Road, which was sadly stolen at the very beginning of the season,” said Amy Darbyshire, co-chair of Sustainable Warminster.

  • Sustainable Warminster Column: Earth Day

Earth Day is the world’s biggest environmental event, run by Earthday.org.

It was inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, where over 4 million gallons of crude oil leaked into the Pacific Ocean after an accident on an oil platform (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The spill killed thousands of sea birds and many other marine animals, sparking a new era in environmentalism.

Fast forward to 22nd April 2026, this year’s theme was “Our Power, Our Planet”, focusing on the idea that both clean energy and people taking action - whether alone or as a group - are seen as the most important things needed to create a better, healthier future for the planet.
