Tributes paid to much-loved teacher

TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved teacher from Kingdown School who died recently aged 53.

Ben Gunstone joined Kingdown School as an English teacher in 2004. Following the news of his death, there has been an outpour of tributes from past and present students, colleagues, and others who knew him.

A spokesperson from the school said, “Ben brought English alive for so many Kingdown students, helping them discover not just literature, but confidence, imagination, and a belief in their own voice.”

During his time at Kingdown, Ben worked as the Head of Lord’s House, as the community link in his role as Assistant Head, and as the school’s army liaison.

“His loss leaves a profound emptiness within the Kingdown School community, where he dedicated more than two decades to teaching, supporting, and uplifting the lives of countless students and staff.

“His dedication to wellbeing was remarkable—he even secured independent funding from the Fudge Trust to provide counselling for some of our most vulnerable students, demonstrating his deep belief in the importance of mental and emotional support.

“As a colleague and friend, Ben was endlessly funny and full of character and good humour. He loved a good general knowledge question, enjoyed raiding his colleagues’ biscuit stashes, and passionately supported Bristol Rovers—often sharing his excitement and heartbreak over their matches with the same enthusiasm he brought to his teaching. Outside school, he was a talented musician and published author – his creative talents were endless. He was also a very caring father to his two devoted girls.

“Ben will be remembered as a gifted teacher, a dedicated mentor, and a truly good man—warm, humorous, principled, and profoundly caring. His influence lives on in the students he inspired, the families he supported, and the colleagues he made smile every single day.

“He will be deeply missed by the Kingdown Community.”

Ben was a lifelong Bristol Rovers supporter and wrote and recorded Tote End Boys, the popular matchday anthem for the club.

His life was honoured with a tribute before the team’s match against Notts County on Saturday 29th November.

  • Athenaeum Singers to perform Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at Bath Abbey

Warminster-based Athenaeum Singers are preparing to take part in a major choral performance at Bath Abbey next month.

The choir will join The Malmesbury Singers and the Bath Philharmonia for a performance of Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at the Abbey on Friday 9th May at 7pm.

Leading the Athenaeum Singers will be their acclaimed Music Director and Conductor Thomas Mottershead. “This will be a very exciting opportunity for two of Wiltshire’s leading choral societies to join forces - something that rarely happens,” he said.

“We are also thrilled to be collaborating with one of the South West’s foremost professional orchestras, Bath Philharmonia, in the magnificent setting of Bath Abbey to provide a truly memorable experience for performance and audience alike. Thanks to the sponsorship of Anglian Home Improvements, we can perform this momentous piece at the scale it truly deserves.”

  • Community supports toad patrol with new sign

Support from the local community has enabled Warminster Toad Patrol to replace a sign that was stolen earlier in the year.

Donations from local people and funds raised at events such as the Toad Party have enabled the group to replace the sign, which was taken within 24 hours of being installed.

“Warminster Toad Patrol have extended their heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated towards replacing their sign on Smallbrook Road, which was sadly stolen at the very beginning of the season,” said Amy Darbyshire, co-chair of Sustainable Warminster.

“The new sign has helped continue raising awareness and encouraging drivers to take care in an area vital to local wildlife.”

  • Sustainable Warminster Column: Earth Day

Earth Day is the world’s biggest environmental event, run by Earthday.org.

It was inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, where over 4 million gallons of crude oil leaked into the Pacific Ocean after an accident on an oil platform (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The spill killed thousands of sea birds and many other marine animals, sparking a new era in environmentalism.

Fast forward to 22nd April 2026, this year’s theme was “Our Power, Our Planet”, focusing on the idea that both clean energy and people taking action - whether alone or as a group - are seen as the most important things needed to create a better, healthier future for the planet.

  • Dementia charity memory walk to return to Warminster

A fundraising walk for a local dementia charity is returning to Warminster this May.

Beyond Dementia’s ‘A Walk to Remember’ will take place on Saturday 9th May, with residents invited to take part.

Walkers and runners will have a choice of two routes: the 7.5-mile Battlesbury Circuit, a more challenging trek that takes participants through Smallbrook Meadows, up Middle Hill and Battlesbury Hill before returning to the finish, or the Meadow Mile, a gentle one-mile stroll around Smallbrook Meadows, ideal for families or anyone seeking a shorter route.

Money raised will help the charity support people living with dementia in Wiltshire, including those who attend the Old Silk Works day club in Warminster.

Community Fundraising Manager Rachel Fear said, “After a three-year break, we’re delighted to welcome back our Memory Walk to Warminster.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to support people living with dementia while connecting with our local community, and we hope you will join us for what promises to be a truly fantastic event.”

  • New £30,000 Wakka Tag play attraction installed as children’s play session relaunch

A local soft play centre is relaunching its popular children’s evening sessions alongside the introduction of an exciting new interactive play feature.

Club Boom, aimed at children in school Years 4 to 6, will return to Boomerang in Melksham from Friday 1st May and run weekly from 6pm to 8pm.

The sessions offer a supervised environment where children can use the facilities with friends, providing what organisers describe as a safe and energetic evening activity. To mark the relaunch, Boomerang is offering 100 free tickets for the opening night.

Alongside the return of Club Boom, the centre has also introduced Wakka Tag, a new £30,000 interactive game installed inside the main soft play frame. The system allows children to tap sensors, score points and compete against others as they move around the play structure.

  • Warminster pupil helps shape how children learn about money

A Warminster boy is helping to shape how children across England learn about money after being chosen for a youth advisory board on financial education.

Luca, aged seven, who attends Minster CofE Primary School, has joined a panel of young people giving their views on how money skills should be taught in schools. He is one of three primary school-aged members on GoHenry’s Kids Financial Education Advisory Board.

The board gives children and young people a voice on plans to introduce financial education to all primary schools in England from September 2028, something GoHenry, a banking app for children, has campaigned for over the past five years.

Together, the six members of the board, aged between seven and 17, will shape recommendations and share their views on how money lessons should be delivered in the classroom. Insights from the board will be shared with policymakers throughout 2026 and beyond.

“It’s great that we’re now going to learn about money at primary school,” said Luca. “I hope we are taught about saving. I’m looking forward to being a member of GoHenry’s Kids Financial Education Advisory Board to make sure children have a say about what we are going to learn at school.”

  • Group to explore community green for town centre site

Residents are set to form a new group to explore the possibility of creating a community green space at a High Street site next to St Lawrence Chapel.

Organisers hope to establish the Chapel Green Association and recruit members from the local community at a meeting on Wednesday 29th April at the Wellbeing Hub.

Plans to redevelop the site, at 3 High Street, into a new shop and ten flats were submitted to Wiltshire Council in 2024 and are currently awaiting a decision.

After the previous building was demolished, some residents called for the site to be retained as an open green space to ‘enhance’ the view of the adjacent St Lawrence Chapel.

The group understands the owner may be open to selling the site and is hoping to raise funds to purchase the land through donors. Contributors would become members of the association and would receive their money back if the purchase is not completed.
