Members of a local social group came together last month to celebrate 25 years of activity in Warminster.
Warminster u3a, a club for retired or semi-retired people, runs more than 40 interest groups, organised and led by members themselves.
Over 100 attendees enjoyed an open event to mark the group’s 25th anniversary. The event included cake, refreshments and performances from members of the Singing for Wellbeing group.
Visitors were able to meet representatives from the various groups and learn about the activities on offer. Two groups have been led by the same people for all 25 years: Margaret Moon, who runs Bookworms I, and Robert Wright, who leads Country Dancing.
“Both are now in their late 80s but are still enthusiastically enjoying leading these groups,” said Warminster u3a chair Maggie Dee.
The club encourages members to stay mentally and physically active while enjoying social connections. Membership also includes access to online opportunities for those who are more housebound.
“One attendee approached me and congratulated me on such an enjoyable occasion,” said Maggie. “He mentioned that having been a widower for several years he decided to visit on the spur of the moment and was heartily glad he did, saying that he had joined one or two groups and will be back for more meetings.”
Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at Warminster Civic Centre, with the next on Wednesday 29th April. Retired university lecturer and published author George Magnus will deliver a talk titled China: What’s in it for us?
Tea, coffee and a chance to chat will be available from 2pm until 2.30pm, followed by the 45-minute talk.
