Warminster u3a celebrates 25th anniversary

Members of a local social group came together last month to celebrate 25 years of activity in Warminster.

Warminster u3a, a club for retired or semi-retired people, runs more than 40 interest groups, organised and led by members themselves.

Over 100 attendees enjoyed an open event to mark the group’s 25th anniversary. The event included cake, refreshments and performances from members of the Singing for Wellbeing group.

Visitors were able to meet representatives from the various groups and learn about the activities on offer. Two groups have been led by the same people for all 25 years: Margaret Moon, who runs Bookworms I, and Robert Wright, who leads Country Dancing.

“Both are now in their late 80s but are still enthusiastically enjoying leading these groups,” said Warminster u3a chair Maggie Dee.

The club encourages members to stay mentally and physically active while enjoying social connections. Membership also includes access to online opportunities for those who are more housebound.

“One attendee approached me and congratulated me on such an enjoyable occasion,” said Maggie. “He mentioned that having been a widower for several years he decided to visit on the spur of the moment and was heartily glad he did, saying that he had joined one or two groups and will be back for more meetings.”

Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at Warminster Civic Centre, with the next on Wednesday 29th April. Retired university lecturer and published author George Magnus will deliver a talk titled China: What’s in it for us?

Tea, coffee and a chance to chat will be available from 2pm until 2.30pm, followed by the 45-minute talk.

  • Have your say on proposed car park charges increase

Residents are invited to have their say on proposed changes to car park charges in Warminster, including higher parking fees, longer chargeable hours, and new Sunday tariffs.

Wiltshire Council is proposing the changes for all council-owned car parks, including those in Warminster.

Plans include an average 20% rise in parking charges in 2026, followed by a further 5% increase in 2028, an extension of chargeable parking hours to 7am–7pm, and changes to Sunday parking charges to bring them in line with weekend rates.

In Warminster, one-hour parking would increase from 40p–50p to 50p–70p per hour. All-day parking would rise from £6.00–£7.70 to £7.10–£8.60.

  • Warminster Town gear up for historic cup final

Excitement is building as Warminster Town prepare to make their first appearance in the Wiltshire FA Senior Cup Final for 17 years.

The club will be aiming to lift the trophy for the first time in more than a century when they face Devizes Town next Tuesday, 14th April at the home of Chippenham Town.

A place in the final was secured back in February when Tyson Pollard’s decisive first‑half strike earned a 1–0 semi‑final victory over Pewsey Vale.

Now, Rob Nash’s side are set to face Devizes in the county showpiece after they overcame Malmesbury Victoria in the other semi‑final.

“It’s great for the club,” said manager Rob Nash. “We’ve been close a few times in recent years but not been able to get over the line. And it’s great for the players too as cup finals don’t come around that often, especially here!

“We are all looking forward to the final and it would be a great achievement for the boys to pick up a trophy as the majority of the squad are local lads representing their home‑town club.”

Warminster Town Football Club has confirmed its first team management will step down at the end of the current season.

  • Nepali culture event raises funds for Gurkha veterans

An event celebrating Nepali culture has raised around £1,000 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Around 150 people came together for the event at Warminster Civic Centre last month, which was filled with traditional Nepali food, cultural performances, educational talks and music.

“The event turned out to be a wonderful success,” said Sisekna Limbu, who organised the day. “What we initially expected to be a small gathering of around 20 to 50 people grew into an event attended by approximately 150 members of the Warminster community.

“The aim of the event was threefold. Firstly, to celebrate and share the beauty of Nepali culture and cuisine with the wider Warminster community."

  • Warminster teen crowned UK’s Young Mammal Champion

A teenager from Warminster has been awarded Young Mammal Champion 2026 for his work as an educator and ambassador for wildlife.

Dexter Painter-Coates, a 14-year-old Warminster Journal deliverer, received the award from the Mammal Society, Britain’s leading charity devoted to the science-led conservation of mammals. He received the award at the charity’s gala dinner in Inverness.

Dexter has worked with the Wiltshire Mammal Group as their Mouse and Shrew Champion, taken part in bat surveys and harvest mouse studies, and led owl pellet workshops. He is also a Youth Ambassador for the Warminster Toad Patrol and an active member of Sustainable Warminster.

“I’m still in complete shock that not only did somebody think I deserved to be nominated for this amazing award, but that then the judges agreed that I deserved to win it,” said Dexter.

  • Local men take first steps in mental health initiative

A new weekly walking group aimed at improving men’s mental health has made a positive start with its first event in Warminster.

Jack Bellairs started the Men Walking and Talking Warminster group as a safe space for men to meet, chat and support each other while walking together. He described the turnout at the first walk as “amazing”.

“The walk went really well,” said Jack, who recently moved to Warminster with his family. “I had 16 men turn up, which was way more than I expected.

“Due to the nights being dark still, we kept to the main road and then did a lap of the town park before heading back to the train station. It was really good to see everyone talking and mixing between the group, all sharing about themselves.

The initiative is part of the national Men Walking and Talking movement, which encourages men to connect through regular walks.

  • Town’s third pharmacy opens in temporary unit

A third pharmacy has opened in a temporary facility in Warminster.

The facility opened on Broxburn Road on Tuesday 7th April, following calls for a third pharmacy in the town to meet demand from several new housing developments.

The temporary structure precedes plans to build a permanent pharmacy alongside the existing site. Co-owner Nikhil Koria, who owns several pharmacies locally, described the ‘tortuous process’ of setting up the unit but said he felt that it would enhance pharmaceutical access, particularly for those in the west of the town.

David Reeves from Health and Wellbeing Warminster, which has campaigned for a third pharmacy in the town, described this as a “positive contribution to the wider community.”
