Local hockey player selected for World Cup squad

A Warminster hockey player has been selected to represent England at the World Masters Hockey World Cup next month.

Clive Nash, of West Wilts Hockey Club, has earned a place in the England LX over-65 squad, which will compete in Breda, Netherlands, in August.

England LX is widely regarded as the country’s leading representative side for players aged 60 and above, bringing together some of the most experienced and accomplished players in the game.

“When I first started, I wouldn’t have been that ambitious, but as you grow into it and have gained experience, you’ve got to push yourself to the next level,” said Clive, who has played the sport for 15 years, after joining the West Wilts Hockey Club aged 50.

To make the final squad, Clive had to attend two trials, one in Nottingham and one in Worcester. He was put up against players from across the country and was one of only four goalkeepers selected to represent England in the over-65 category.

“I’m excited to be part of the team,” said Clive. “I was surprised to be selected, because I thought there would be people who had been in the over-60 team that would naturally be in the over-65 team. So, coming in as a player that hasn’t played in that, I was surprised, but I’ve just got to be good on the day and as part of the team.”

The World Masters Hockey World Cup will take place in Breda in the Netherlands from 6th to 16th August.
