Earth Day is the world’s biggest environmental event, run by Earthday.org.
It was inspired by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, where over 4 million gallons of crude oil leaked into the Pacific Ocean after an accident on an oil platform (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The spill killed thousands of sea birds and many other marine animals, sparking a new era in environmentalism.
Fast forward to 22nd April 2026, this year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet”, focusing on the idea that both clean energy and people taking action – whether alone or as a group – are seen as the most important things needed to create a better, healthier future for the planet.
Although the environmental challenges we face can feel overwhelming and we may feel helpless, even small steps can make a difference on a local and global scale. There are many ways as an individual you can create positive impact: boycott online giant retailers and market-places, recycle unwanted IT equipment (Warminster has several schemes), encourage local authorities to commit to addressing local and wider environmental challenges, plan or take part in local cleanups, find and get involved in local or regional tree-planting, sign a petition, make an Earth Day window sign to highlight the event, plant flowers like sunflowers and lavender that attract bees, or buddleja that attract butterflies.
