The construction of new living, working and training facilities has begun at Battlesbury Barracks in Warminster as part of a £50 million investment in Army infrastructure across Salisbury Plain.
Preparatory work is underway to modernise facilities for 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment (2RYORKS) at Battlesbury Barracks. Main construction is scheduled to begin this summer and will deliver a new Officers’ Mess, modern Quartermaster facilities and a gym extension. Refurbishment of the Regimental Headquarters has already been completed.
The project forms part of the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) Portfolio, supporting the relocation of military personnel to Salisbury Plain. Around £37 million is being invested at Battlesbury Barracks, with a further £13 million being invested at Assaye Barracks in Tidworth.
The investment supports the relocation of 2RYORKS from Chester to Warminster and will provide improved facilities for Army personnel.
“The start of major construction at Tidworth and Warminster marks another important step forward in delivering a modernised army estate,” said Brigadier Grant Kerr, Head of Army Infrastructure Plans. “Investment in high-quality infrastructure is enhancing the day-to-day experience of our people, while directly supporting operational capability and making best use of the defence footprint.”
Allan Thomson, Chief Executive Officer at Aspire Defence Ltd, said, “These projects will deliver high-quality facilities that directly support the rebasing of units and improve the day-to-day experience of Army personnel. We remain committed to delivering infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of the Army, both now and in the future.”
The projects are expected to be completed by early 2028.
