An exciting free exhibition is underway at the Arts at the Athenaeum Gallery this April – and there’s just one week left to visit.
Using artefacts and information from the vast Athenaeum archives, the display covers more than 100 years of animated films that have been shown in the building.
Archivist Andrew Frostick said, “Our building is one of the oldest non-cinema venues in the country still showing film, having started in 1897 with pictures by the Lumière Brothers. The Athenaeum was bringing animations and cartoons to the people of Warminster from the days of silent films in the 1920s.
“We are displaying the actual sheet music used in the building in 1925 for Felix the Cat cartoons. Also on display is a range of film posters illustrating the changing face of cartoons through the decades.
“To accompany the Disney films are costumes used in a past production at the Athenaeum.”
The Disney exhibition is open at the Athenaeum Monday to Saturday from 10.30am to 1pm until the end of April.
Entry is free and all are welcome. In May, a new exhibition all about the Wylye Valley Arts Trail will be on display in the Arts at the Athenaeum Gallery.
