Late equaliser denies Warminster Town but plenty of positives

Warminster Town were forced to settle for a point on the road at Longwell Green Sports after a thrilling 2-2 draw in a proper Western League encounter.

Town started brightly and took the lead through Ben Snell. A clever flick-on from Charlie Walton allowed Snell to turn his man before firing an unstoppable effort into the top corner to give Warminster a deserved advantage.

However, the lead lasted barely any time at all. Straight from the restart, a long ball wasn’t dealt with by the Town defence, allowing Longwell Green to capitalise and lob Sam Jepson to bring the hosts level.

The two sides went into the break level at 1-1, with both teams providing plenty of entertainment in an open and competitive first-half.

Warminster regained the lead in the second-half, with Walton once again proving influential. Another flick-on from the forward put Snell through, and the striker made no mistake, firing home his second of the afternoon to restore Town’s advantage.

With five minutes remaining, Warminster looked set to take all three points, but a lapse of concentration at the back allowed Longwell Green to find a late equaliser and rescue a point for the hosts.

Despite the disappointment of conceding so late, it was an excellent performance from Warminster, who are beginning to look increasingly like a unit following the recent changes to the squad.

Two goals from Snell, two assists from Walton and a battling team performance gave Town plenty of positives to take from the afternoon.

In the end, both sides shared the points, but it was a fantastic game for the neutral – an entertaining, competitive and hard-fought proper Western League game.
